MEETING DATE: September 16, 2015
PREPARED BY: Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Director
C 14
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Receive update on emergency condition at Grape Bowl.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: A water leak beneath the artificial playing surface at the Grape Bowl
was discovered on August 10, 2015, resulting in large amounts of
engineered fill being washed away and a collapse of a section of the
field. On August 19, the City Council declared an emergency condition exists at the Grape Bowl so that
staff could expedite repairs and prevent additional failures of the engineered foundation.
Contracts with FieldTurf Tarkett and A.M. Stephens were executed earlier this month. Work was
scheduled to commence on September 14. Estimated cost remains approximately $75,000, with $80,000
appropriated from the Parks Capital fund for this repair. Part of the expense may be covered by City
insurance.
Staff anticipates the field will be ready to accommodate football games the week of September 21.
FISCAL IMPACT: Not applicable.
FUNDING AVAILABLE: Not applicable.

field. On August 19, the City Council declared an emergency condition exists at the Grape Bowl so that

Contracts with FieldTurf Tarkett and A.M. Stephens were finalized this month. Work commenced on
September 15, with FieldTurf cutting and pulling back the playing surface and A.M. Stephens excavating
the affected area this morning. A large hole was found within a T-shaped connector in a 2 -inch water pipe
(picture attached).
A.M. Stephens is expected to complete its repairs this week, with FieldTurf scheduled to return on
Monday and complete work next Wednesday, September 23. This will allow season's remaining football
games to be played as scheduled, and resumption of fall youth soccer at the Grape Bowl.
Estimated cost of the repairs will likely be in the $40,000 range, less than the worst-case estimate of
$75,000. The City Council appropriated $80,000 for this work on August 19.
Staff anticipates the field will be ready to accommodate football games the week of September 21.
FISCAL IMPACT: Not applicable.
