BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Statewide public opinion research has found that 98 percent of California households visit a local park at least once a year; two- thirds visit a park once a month; half of households participate in an organized recreation program; and most park use is with family and friends. Residents value recreation as it provides positive alternatives for children and youth to reduce crime and mischief especially during nonschool hours. It promotes the arts, it increases social connections, aids in therapy and promotes lifelong learning. Lodi residents, including children, youth, families, adults, seniors, businesses, community organizations, and visitors benefit from the wide range of parks, trails, open space, sports fields, tennis courts, facilities and programs. Thousands of residents participate in youth sports and other activities, and Lodi Lake Park has more than 200,000 visitors a year. Through this proclamation, the City Council urges all its residents to recognize that parks and recreation enrich the lives of Lodi residents and visitors, as well as add value to the community's homes and neighborhoods. With July being celebrated across the nation as Parks and Recreation Month, the Council is asked to proclaim July 2015 as Parks Make Life Better® Month in the City of Lodi FISCAL IMPACT: None. We work on it every day. We're fortunate to have gems such as Lodi Lake Park, and well-maintained ballfields. Like good schools, a healthy park system improves home values, lures business and contributes to our overall quality of life. It's essential that we keep Lodi's park system strong and recreation programs vibrant. You can help by making a tax- deductible gift to one of our two funds set up through the Lodi Community Foundation. One helps us pay for immedi- ate needs, such as replacing outdated playground equip- ment. The other is an endow- ment fund, serving as the acorn that grows into an oak that provides beauty and shade year after year. It's your choice. It's your park system.
