BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Tree Lodiwas recently invited by California Releaf, in cooperation with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, to apply for a 2014-15 Social Equity Tree Planting Grant. The purpose of the California Releaf 2014-15 Social Equity Tree Planting Grant Program is to bring trees to underserved and severely disadvantaged communities by supporting nonprofit and Community-based organizations with funding for urban tree planting projects. Grant funds are for costs associated with the purchase and planting of trees, and the maintenance of those trees during the grant period. The City of Lodi, in its entirety, qualifies under the definition of a disadvantaged community. Tree Lodi submitted its grant application requesting the maximum award of $7,000 to assist the City with the Peterson Park urban forest revitalization project. lt was awarded the grant on October 29,2014.Tree Lodi is offering to donate the entire grant award to the City to offset some project expenses, such as stump grinding, purchase of trees and other supplies. The City's role includes providing Parks Division staff labor, coordinating volunteer hours and project oversight. Tree Lodi will be responsible for grant administration, expenditure documentation, production and submittal of the required final report to California Releaf due March 23,2015. Tree Lodi will assemble, train and facilitate the necessary volunteers for the various phases of this tree planting project. The Park Superintendent has worked closely with Tree Lodi regarding public outreach meetings, a master tree replacement planting plan and a proposed three year establishment and maintenance period. The final phase of the Peterson Park urban forest revitalization project will be celebrated by planting the final trees on Arbor Day, April 11,2015, within the 22 acres of Peterson Park. FISCAL IMPACT:Accepting the funds from Tree Lodi reduces the need to expend PRCS funds to complete the project.
