BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The ninth annual National Dump the Pump Day is a day encouraging people to ride public transportation to save money, protect the environment, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and improve the quality of life for all Americans. This is the third year the City of Lodi Transit Division has participated in the Dump the Pump Day campaign. On Thursday, June 19,2014, the City of Lodi Transit Division is offering free rides on the fixed routes, and the City's transit contractor, MV Transportation, lnc., will be donating raffle prizes (transit passes). The National Dump the Pump Day campaign provided the following statistics:. People who ride public transportation can save, on average, more than $10,000 per year, based on today's gas prices, the cost of owning a car and the average unreserved parking rate.. U.S. public transportation use reduces the country's carbon footprint by 37 million metric tons - the equivalent of 4.9 million households using electricity in ayear.. U.S. public transportation use saves 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline per year - the equivalent of 900,000 cars filling up every day.. Public transportation provides personal mobility and freedom for people from every walk of life. A representative from the City of Lodi Transit Division and MV Transportation, lnc., will be present to accept the proclamation. FISCAL IMPACT:Not applicable.
