HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - October 6, 1999 D-03bCITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Presentation To Winners Of The Year 2000 Steering Committee Poetry Contest And Essay Contest MEETING DATE: October 6, 1999 PREPARED BY: City Clerk RECOMMENDED ACTION: That Mayor Land present gift certificates from the City of Lodi and Barnes & Noble to the winners of the Year 2000 Steering Committee Poetry and Essay Contests. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Year 2000 Steering Committee initiated a series of contests that involved each track at Lodi Unified School District (LUSD) and area private schools. In addition to the Place Mat Contest, Poetry and Essay contests were held for middle school children of the area. The submittals were to depict our community and life in Lodi. The Committee felt this would be a wonderful way to focus on the City's year of celebration and at the same time showcase the work of young people from our community. Inasmuch as winners were selected from each school that submitted entries, additional winners will be announced at a future meeting. Listed below are the winners of the Poetry and Essay Contests. Poetry Contest Winners • Marcus Paul Thames, 9th Grade, Lodi Academy High • Amanda Podesta, 7th Grade, Lodi 7'h Day Adventist Elementary School • Harry Centeno, 12"' Grade, Plaza Robles High • Tania Reed, 11th Grade, Plaza Robles High Essay Contest Winners • Garrett Yacopetti, 7th Grade, St. Anne's School • Bobby Caffese, 8th Grade, St. Anne's School • Sarah Steiner, 7th Grade, St. Peter's School • Kristen Witt, 711 Grade, St. Peter's School • Erika Haas, 8th Grade, St. Peter's School Barnes & Noble has been very generous in working with the City of Lodi to provide $50 gift certificates to each of the winners. The winning entries for the Poetry and Essay Contests will be placed in the City of Lodi Time Capsule, which will be dedicated during the December 31, 1999 Year -End Celebration Event.
