HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - August 4, 1999 E-07CITY OF LODI COUNCII, COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Purchase of Three Notebook Computers for Public Works Department's Street Division under CMAS Contract ($9,500) MEETING DATE: August 4, 1999 PREPARED BY: Public Works Director RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council adopt the attached resolution authorizing the purchase of three notebook computers, for use by the Streets Division supervisors, from Dell Computer Corporation, in the amount of $9,503.55. Purchase would be made under the California Department of General Services' CMAS contract with Dell, approved by Council June 16, 1999, and currently being used for purchase of desktop systems. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: These notebook computers will be used by the three Street Supervisors for both field and office applications. Applications include a pavement management system used both on-site and off during the visual asphalt condition -rating operation. Field applications also include the gathering of information in the graffiti abatement effort, and the tracking of projects, such as sidewalk or pavement repairs. In the office, the notebook computers will serve as the Supervisors' network workstations in limited - space environments. Currently, the Supervisors do not have personal computers at their workstations. Purchase from Dell is recommended for several reasons. First, the company continues to receive high marks for performance (Dell received an Editor's Choice award for notebooks in the August 1999 issue of PC Magazine), and for reliability and service. Second, by virtue of several competitive quotes, the City has Dell notebooks currently in service, so both users and support staff are familiar with the setup and operation of the computers. Also, the new notebooks would be compatible with existing Dell docking stations should a user need access to a larger monitor or to the City's network. Finally, pricing for the notebooks is covered under the CMAS contract with Dell, providing the City with the same discount schedule afforded to desktop systems. A copy of the notebook computer's configuration is attached as Exhibit A. FUNDING: Street Division's 1999/2000 Operating Budget Funding Available: of k b l Finance Dire for Richard C.
