MEETING DATE: August 4, 1999 PREPARED BY: Community Development Director RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the Mayor present Jack & Kate Holler and Family with the Community Improvement Award for August 1999. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Jack and Kate Holler live in the Southwest area of Lodi and in their travels in and out of their neighborhood, they found a property located on the Southeast comer of Ham and Kettleman Lanes, the former Cask and Cleaver/ Little Joe's Restaurant site which has been closed for several months, to be an eyesore due to the overgrown weeds and debris that had been allowed to accumulate around the vacant building. Not wanting that kind of blighting influence to get a foothold in that area, Mr. & Mrs. Holler and their children took it upon themselves to cut the weeds and dead limbs from the landscaped areas around the restaurant and all weeds, limbs and debris into a neat pile to be picked up. Kate Holler then contacted the Community Improvement Division to engage our assistance in contacting the ownership in order to get them to maintain the property. That property, as well as the adjacent commercial center has become the focus of code enforcement activity in an effort to keep the properties from being any further nuisance to the surrounding residential neighborhoods, as well to the motorists that travel through our community on Kettleman Lane/State Highway 12. Notices have been issued to several tenants or property owners within that shopping center complex to gain their compliance. The Community Improvement Division felt that the Holler Family's efforts in keeping the city free from blight deserved some recognition and therefore forwarded their nomination to the Eastside Improvement Committee, which unanimously approved the nomination and awarded the Community Improvement Award for the month of August to Jack and Kate Holler and Family.
