HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - September 1, 1999 E-04CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
AGENDA TITLE: Purchase of Six Notebook Computers for Police Department under
CMAS Contract ($14,685.25)
MEETING DATE: September 1, 1999
PREPARED BY: Police Chief
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council adopt the attached resolution authorizing the
purchase of six notebook computers, for use by the Police
Department, from Dell Computer Corporation in the amount of
$14,685.25.
Purchase would be made under the California Department of General Services' WAS contract, currently
being used for purchase of desktop systems from Dell (ref. Council Resolution 99-88). Funding is provided
under the Federal COPS-More/Records Management System Grant.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: These computers are planned for use in Administration (2), the Field
Training Officers Unit (2), Traffic Division Unit (1), and Information
Systems/PD (1).
The two computers in Administration will be used by the Chief and by Capt. Adams and Lt. Dean for access
to records as well as for management purposes from both local and remote locations. The three notebooks
assigned to the Field Training Officers and the Traffic Division will be used to access records, and for training
purposes. The Information Systems/PD computer will be used by the Police Departments systems
administrator for diagnostics and repairs on the network from remote locations.
As presented to the City Council during the meeting of August 4 (for the purchase of three notebooks for the
Streets Division), purchase from Dell is recommended for a number of reasons. First, the company continues
to receive high marks for performance (Dell received an Editor's Choice award for notebooks in the August,
1999 issure of PC Magazine), and for reliability and service. Second, by virtue of several competitive quotes,
the City has Dell notebooks currently in service, so both users and support staff are familiar with the setup
and operation of the computers. Also, the new notebooks would be compatible with existing Dell docking
stations, should a user need access to a larger monitor or to the city's network. Finally, pricing for the
notebooks is covered under the CMAS contract with Dell, providing the City with the same discount schedule
afforded to desktop systems.
A copy of the notebooks' configuration is attached as Exhibit A.
