BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The City of Lodi has received numerous complaints from residents, passengers, and drivers about the two big diesel GrapeLine buses we operate. The City has been successful in acquiring grants from the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (SJVAPCD) and the Energy Commission to convert the gasoline Dial -A -Ride buses to CNG. The original project totaled $198,550 and included conversion of the two oldest (1993) diesel Dial -A -Ride buses. This was determined not to be cost effective given the age and use of the vehicles. The amount remaining is approximately $70,000. With the money that is left over from these grants, the Public Works Department recommends converting GrapeLine Bus 40 to CNG. The existing engine is a Cummins 5.9 liter and will be converted to a CNG Cummins 5.9 liter engine. NGV Ecotrans converted the Dial -A -Ride buses and is the solely -authorized Cummins converter in California. Therefore, we have negotiated this contract with them. The total estimated cost is $60,000. The bus will remain in the fleet long term, and will serve as the training bus when the new GrapeLine buses arrive. FUNDING: SJVAPCD, Energy Commission and TDA. Funds were previously appropriated. Richard C.
