CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
AGENDA TITLE: Presentation by the Greater Lodi Area Youth Commission
Regarding Honoring Teens program.
MEETING DATE: April 21,1999

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Presentation.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Greater Lodi Area Youth Commission, in
conjunction with the Lodi Sunrise Rotary Club and Christopher J. Olsen, American
Express Financial Advisors, and Central Valley Waste Services is sponsoring a program
entitled Honoring Teens. The Lodi Youth Commission Leadership Committee selects
one teen to be awarded Teen of the Month from the applications submitted to the
commission from the general public, various schools, and church groups. This month's
Teen of the Month is Melissa Fisher from Lodi High School and the Honorary Teen of
the Month is Scotty Fernandes from Lodi High School

April Teen of the Month
Melissa Fisher is a Senior at Lodi High School. Melissa excels in academics and has
maintained an impressive 3.79 GPA whiled enrolled in a rigorous college preparatory
curriculum including taking six of the thirteen Advanced Placement courses offered at
Lodi High School. Melissa is the eldest of three. She has assisted her mother and family
while working twenty-five hours per week as a checker at Longs Pharmacy. She remains
active in Girl Scouts in order to earn the Gold Award, the highest awa5rd. While other
high school age girls have quit Girl Scouts, she remains loyal to honor a pledge that she
made to her Scout leader who was killed by a drunk driver while returning from a Scout
trip in 1995. For the last three years she has been a state qualifier for Speech. She was
selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on medicine in Washington D.C.
this past summer, and she organized a spaghetti dinner as a fundraiser to finance her trip.
Melissa also began the first Teen Crisis Hot Line in conjunction with the Women's
Center. Melissa's goal is to become a physician.
April - Honorary Teen of the Month
Scotty Fernandes is a Junior at Lodi High School. For the past several months, Scotty
has been involved as an active, voting member of the School Site council at Lodi High.
Not only has he participated in all meetings, he has demonstrated positive leadership
skills and in many cases provided valuable information and insight during the decision
making process. I admire his spirit, enthusiasm and ability to step in and want to make a
difference.
