We have been informed that the City Council is con-
templating renaming our Public Library in honor of C. M.
Sullivan, Jr, in recognition of his unrelenting energy,
guidance, and direction in promoting our library facilities
during his tenure as library Board Member and President.
Clearly, no one in our community has given more than "Bud" to
develop, champion and bring to fruition our excellent and
indispensable library facility. Such commendation to Mr.
Sullivan is certainly well deserved, and we heartily support the
bestowing by the City Council of such honor and recognition.
Please communicate our expression of support to the City
Council.
Thanking you for your consi eration,

Dear Council Members,
It has come to my attention that you will be considering the naming of
the Lodi Public Library in honor of Mr. Bud Sullivan at tonight's council
meeting. I can think of no better gesture to honor a man who has
volunteered over thirty years of his life to our library. Bud has also
served as president of the California Library Association at his own
personal expense.
Bud has demonstrated a commitment that is very rarely found in a
community today. The library would not exist in its present form
without the previous efforts of Bud Sullivan. Perhaps your actions this
evening will be an inspiration to all of the unsung volunteers and
motivation for the additional volunteers Lodi so desperately needs.
Unfortunately I will be out of town this evenint; and unable to
personally attend the meeting. Your serious consideration and
support of this item is appreciated.
tfully yours,
?dyider

Mr. Mayor, City Councilmen, City Clerk:
It is a pleasure to add Congratulations and applaud the dedication
of Bud Sullivan for his years of service on the Board of Trustees
of Lodi Public Library.
As for a new name: one could suggest Amy Boynton, long -serving head
librarian. To many, she WAS the Lodi Library. While Amy's Fountain
has been inactive for years, it does remind us of her dedication.
Wilson Henry and Celia Crocker Thompson cannot be ignored in any
list of the library's benefactors. They were dedicated people who
strove to improve our library and town. His character and life's
work, and that of others who attended or taught in the San Joaquin
Valley College, caused the raising of the monument in front of
Woods Middle School in 1956.
In 1952, Mrs. Thompson donated the vault, which became the Board
Room and remains in the basement of Carnegie Forum. Dedicated to
his 51 years as a Trustee, 48 as President, and named the "Wilson
Henry Thompson Room", its purpose was to preserve their and all
books and papers on local and California history. Not insignificant
are the scrapbooks which she prepared throughout her life and which
are being used by students of history. Mr. Thompson died in 1953;
Mrs. in 1965; each in their 90's.
Does the vault now preserve our City's vital papers?
The new library does not have such a vault, and Mr. Thompson's name
is not on the Board Room or California Room. The Trustees did not
want any personal name in or on the library.
So his history fades away, and the California collection gradually
-Fades away for lack of proper environmental safeguards.
Our library began in early reading rooms in 1685, financed by bake
sales, baseball games, concerts. Andrew Carnegie's gift in 1908 is
recalled in this beautiful Forum. From those who have served on
the Board of Trustees since 1901, whom should we choose to honor:
one who served 51, 45, 35, 27 years? This list cannot be winnowed
to have one name represent them all.
Lodi Public Library is a very good name.

As named, this sounds as though the library containthe personal
papers and collections of Mr. Sullivan, not the Public library.
