Additionally, he has been very active in the Amateur Softball Association representing Lodi at regional and national conferences and served the Greater San Joaquin Metro. Initially, the Adult Sports Advisory Board recommended renaming the Softball Complex to the Tom Chapman Softball Complex. The Parks and Recreation Commission was not in favor of this, however they were unanimously in favor of naming the ball field at Armory Park in Mr. Chapman's honor. The Parks and Recreation staff support this recommendation. Mr. Chapman is very ill. It is hoped that he will be honored at a benefit dinner Sunday, May 5, 1996 with the naming of this ball field at Armory Park. FUNDING: $950 (estimated cost of sign) from Recreation Division operating funds and/or private donations. i Ron Williamson, Director Parks and Recreation RW/sb APPRCVED:1Z H. DIO N FLYNN recyc`paper City Manager CC -1 "T 6— MEMORANDUM, City of Lodi, Parks and Recreation Department To: Parks and Recreation Commissioners From: Ron Williamson, Parks and Recreation Director Date: April 18, 1996 Subject: Naming the Softball Complex the "Tom Chapman Softball Complex" Mike Reese, our recreation supervisor who coordinates the adult sports programs and the Adult Sports Advisory Board, has asked that the Softball Complex, 401 N. Stockton Street, be renamed the Tom Chapman Softball Complex per the Adult Sports Advisory Board's request and his recommendation (see attached memo.) As you know, Mr. Chapman is very sick. He has served the city since 1973, involving himself as umpire -in -chief, basketball manager, and program field/gym supervisor. He has made adult sports what they are today - a major program block that all of Lodi is proud of and is known throughout the state and region. A benefit dinner will be held Sunday, May 5, at the Tokay Bowl Tiki Room. We would like to announce the renaming of the facility at this affair and possibly present a painted sign to be located later in the park. I am asking each of you to phone in your vote (aye or no) to Susan or myself by Wednesday, April 24. If you approve this request, I will fast track it to the City Manager and City Council. We very much would like to meet the May 5 dinner as Mr. Chapman is not doing well and may not be with us this summer. I think you understand. You may ask the question - do I have the right to do this, what is the procedure, etc. We have Peterson Park, Salas Park, David Reese Administrative Building, Marilyn E. Field Swim Complex to name a few. It gets down to what we want to do, who we want to honor and really when, as shown by the City Council in renaming Westgate Park to Peterson Park. Thank you for your interest. Please call me at 333-6742 with your vote by April 24, noon. RW:sb "T (b MEMORANDUM, City of Lodi, Parks and Recreation Department To: Ron Williamson From: Michael S.
