HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions - No. 3394RESOLUTION NO. 3394 A RESOLUTION URGING IMMEDIATE ACTION BE TAKEN TO REVIEW AND UPDATE RAILROAD SAFETY STANDARDS WHEREAS. in recent years there has been a startling increase in the derailment of trains, often hauling explosive and toxic substances, including one on June 21, 1970, at Crescent City, Illinois; and WHEREAS, such derailments threaten cities and towns with injury and death of their residents and economic disaster; and WHEREAS, there is a need for a review and updating of railroad safety standards, including road bed and rolling stock maintenance, and the speed of trains through urban areas, especially on rail line and trains which carry explosive and toxic substances; and WHEREAS, railroad safety standards are a matter of state-wide and national concern beyond the scope of authority of cities to regulate: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Lodi that it urges the Interstate Commerce Commission, the California Public Utilities Commission and railroads operating within the State of California, to immediately take the necessary steps to review and update railroad safety standards, including road bed and rolling stock maintenance, and the speed of trains through urban areas, especially on rail lines and trains which carry explosive and toxic substances.
