AGENDA TITLE: Authorize Grant Application for an Electric Bus and Twenty -Bay
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Fueling Station
MEETING DATE: April 10, 1996
PREPARED BY: Public Works Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Authorize the City Manager to submit grant applications to the
San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District for the purchase of an
electric bus ($65,000) and a CNG fueling station ($40,000).
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has available a
grant program called Reduced Motor Vehicle Emissions
(REMOVE). The City's grant writer, John Griffin, is preparing a
grant application to utilize available funds for the purchase of an
electric bus and a CNG fueling station.
In the past, the City Council has expressed an interest in utilizing alternative fuels wherever possible.
The next group of transit vehicles we purchase will undoubtedly use CNG. We presently have a Police
vehicle using CNG and the possibilities for use in other departments is certainly viable.
Now is also an ideal time to experiment with the use of electric vehicles. Transit would be a good place
to test an electric bus.
The deadline for submitting this grant application is April 15, 1996.
FUNDING: No funding required at this time.
