HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - January 20, 1999 E-154 1 4 CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION 1 AGENDA TITLE: Authorize City Manager to Execute Design and "Art in Public Places" Contracts for ` Loel Center Bus Stop Shelter MEETING DATE: January 20, 1999 PREPARED BY: Public Works Director 4 RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council authorize the City Manager to execute an agreement with Wenell Mattheis Bowe, of Stockton, for the design of the Loel Center Bus Stop Shelter; execute an agreement with Sheila Ghidini, of San Francisco, for the "Art in Public Places" component of the shelter; and appropriate funds in accordance with the recommendation shown below. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Loel Center bus stop is the third busiest stop on the GrapeLine route, and, since the Center is undergoing remodeling, Loel Center and City staff thought that a specially designed shelter would be a great addition to the community on the eastside. The Arts Commission was approached to determine if an "Art in Public Places" component could be incorporated to the shelter. Also, the Federal Transit Administration, Lodi's main funding source for capital projects, strongly endorses specially designed bus shelters throughout the country. The art component consists of citizen -made tile -faced columns developed through a workshop process with the artist. The overall project was originally approved by the City Council in September 1998.
