HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - October 7, 1998 (78)CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Redesignation Of The Crepe Myrtle As The Official Tree Of The City Of Lodi MEETING DATE: October 7, 1998 PREPARED BY: City Clerk RECOMMENDED ACTION: That, following a presentation by representatives of the City of Lodi Year 2000 Steering Committee and the president of the three Rotary Clubs, the City Council adopt the attached resolution redesignating the Crepe Myrtle as the official tree of the City of Lodi. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Many years ago, the Crepe Myrtle was designated as the official tree of the City of Lodi. Following the designation, the Lodi Rotary Club each year would recognize this fact by providing each of its members with a small Crepe Myrtle tree. We feel that this community -spirited gesture by the Lodi Rotary Club played a significant part in the abundant plantings of this lovely tree in Lodi. As a part of the City of Lodi Year 2000 Celebration, the Committee is attempting to look back into the history of our community as well as providing a glimpse into the future as we enter the new millennium. Therefore, the Committee felt it would be most appropriate to have the City Council redesignate the Crepe Myrtle as the official tree of the City of Lodi as a part of our celebration. Inasmuch as the Lodi Rotary initiated a community planting effort through its membership many years ago, we contacted the presidents of each Lodi Rotary Club, namely: JoAnne McLane Rantz, Lodi Rotary Club Donald H. Fraser, Lodi Sunrise Rotary Club Jerry J. Adams, Lodi-Tokay Rotary Club to see if they would be interested in renewing this wonderful tradition. The three clubs have agreed to purchase 600 Crepe Myrtles from Weigums Lodi Nursery and distribute these plants through a voucher system to their members. The Year 2000 Steering Committee is delighted that this lovely old tradition will once again be carried out by Lodi Rotarians and know that these plantings will add significantly to the beauty and charm of this community. FUNDING: None required. AMRrjjmp &"k '7 Alice M. Reimche City Clerk APPROVED' H.
