HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - September 16, 1998 (61)AGENDA TITLE: Plans and Specifications and Advertisement for Bids for Loel Center Bus Stop, Corner of Oak and Washington Streets MEETING DATE: September 16, 1998 PREPARED BY: Public Works Director RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council approve the plans and specifications for the above project and authorize advertising for bids. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Loel Center approached the City of Lodi to inquire about installing a bus shelter at the corner of Oak and Washington streets. Since the bus stop for Loel Center is the third busiest stop on the GrapeLine, and the Loel Center is undergoing remodeling, the Loel Center thought that a specially designed shelter would be a great addition to the community on the eastside. The Arts Commission was approached to determine if they could incorporate an "Art in Public Places" component to the shelter. Also, the Federal Transit Administration, Lodi's main funding source for capital projects, strongly endorses incorporating local art in bus shelters. The Commission and Loel Center have embraced the concept and have worked with their architect on the design. The shelter consists of tile -faced columns and sitting blocks straddling the sidewalk, a roof, windscreens and two to four paintings. It will be located at the corner of Washington and Oak Streets and will be incorporated into the sidewalk. The tiles will be painted by citizens, including children, through a workshop process handled by the Arts Commission. Funds for the project were included in the Transit capital budget. FUNDING: Funding for this project will be coming from FTA and TDA funds in the amount of $55,000.
