HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - September 2, 1998 (31)AGENDA TITLE: Lodi Public Safety Building Renovation Planning ($40,000)
MEETING DATE: September 2, 1998
PREPARED BY: Public Works Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council authorize the City Manager to execute a
professional services agreement with George Miers & Associates, of
Moraga, to establish programming and prepare basic (schematic)
drawings for the Public Safety Building renovation.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: At its June 19, 1998 meeting, City Council directed the Public Works
Department to reinterview the other two architectural firms
considered for the Public Safety Building master plan and to return
to Council with a recommendation to establish a programming plan
and remodel design for the City's Public Safety Building. After reviewing the material submitted and
doing reference background checking, the City interviewed the two architectural firms. The interviewing
was done by a selection committee made up of Police Chief Larry Hansen, Fleet and Facilities Manager
Dennis Callahan, Construction Manager Gary Wiman, and Public Works Director Richard Prima.
The committee unanimously recommends that the firm of George Miers & Associates be retained to
prepare programming and basic (schematic) design drawings. George Miers & Associates specializes in
public safety buildings and has recently or is currently working with the city's of Antioch, Livermore,
San Pablo, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco police departments in the areas of master planning,
remodeling and new construction. George Miers & Associates will evaluate the previous Master Plan
with the understanding that Fire Station #1 will be relocated, and will examine various alternatives for
phasing the renovation and future expansion of the building. After this first phase, staff will return to
Council with a program, basic floor plan drawings, and a proposed project budget to enact the plan.
This planning phase will take approximately twelve weeks to complete and will include public
involvement.
FUNDING: The total cost for this phase will be approximately $40,000. Funding is available from
previous appropriations for the project.
