CITY OF LODE COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
ctrFow''
AGENDA TITLE: Authorization for Use of Remaining Nature Area Trail Grant Funds at Lodi
Lake Park ($20,076.57)
MEETING DATE: May 21, 1997
PREPARED BY: Parks and Recreation Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That City Council authorize reallocation of Lodi Lake Nature Area
Trail Grant funds.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: In July 1993, the city was awarded a 50/50 matching grant
from the State of California Habitat Conservation Fund for a
decomposed granite trail in the Nature Area. The state
awarded $20,000 and the city matched this amount for a
total of $40,000. This project was completed at a cost of
$19,923.43.
Parks and Recreation staff recently met with California Parks and Recreation Department staff to
suggest use of the remaining grant funds. Three projects were suggested by city staff that were
thought to be within the tight parameters of the grant language. They include: repairs to the
decomposed granite trail; twenty-two station interpretive signs and brochure; and an information
center. The state approved these projects as presented.
It is hoped that volunteer, service club and Boys Scout labor will be utilized for the projects. The
state will credit the value of the volunteer time as the city's match, leaving the city's match unused
(approximately $10,000) which can then be targeted for another matching grant application in
October 1997.
All three projects have been approved by the Nature Area Advisory Committee and Lodi Lake
Docent Council.

Dear Ms. Arteaga:
This letter is to confirm our conversation and meeting of April 15, 1997 in your offices whereby
we discussed and reviewed our request to use the remaining funds in the Lodi Lake Trails Grant
(Project Number HT -39-001) to accomplish further improvements in our 58 -acre nature area.
Our records show that we fiave $20,076.57 remaining in the account (account number 121.0-
760.84) which is 50/50 matching funds. As discussed, I am forwarding the three projects we have
identified that are in keeping with the grant intent.
Project 1 Repairs to D.G. trail due to winter floods
Project 2 22 Station Interpretive signs and brochure
Project 3 Information Center
We will be using various service clubs, volunteers and Boy Scout groups along with our park staff
to accomplish most of the work. I want to thank you and your department for your consideration
in helping us accomplish further needs we have in making this unique nature area a vital
environmental education resource for our citizenry.
Respectfully,
i
Dwight W. Dauber
Parks Superintendent
