AGENDA TITLE: California Energy Commission Grant for Compressed Natural Gas Engines for
Transit Buses
MEETING DATE: June 18, 1997
PREPARED BY: Public Works Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That City Council adopt the attached resolution accepting the
California Energy Commission Grant for compressed natural gas (CNG)
engines for Transit buses and authorizing the City Manager to execute
the agreement; and appoint the Transportation Manager as
Project Manager for this grant.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Assembly Bill 1671, Chapter 980, Statutes of 1995, included
appropriations from the Petroleum Violation Escrow Account to the
California Energy Commission. The California Energy Commission
awarded the City of Lodi a $95,000 grant for CNG buses. After
much research, staff is recommending using the grant money for the purchase of CNG engines.
Conversion kits for the engines were considered, but there would be no emission savings with a
converted gas engine. The CNG engines will replace the ones currently in the fleet.
FUNDING: Not applicable.
