MEETING DATE: March 18, 1998 PREPARED BY: Special Projects Coordinator RECOMMENDED ACTION: Presentation. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Greater Lodi Area Youth Commission, in conjunction with the Lodi Sunrise Rotary Club and Christopher J. Olsen, American Express Financial Advisors, is sponsoring a program entitled Honoring Teens. The Lodi Youth Commission Leadership Committee selects one teen to be awarded Teen of the Month from the applications submitted to the commission from the general public, various schools, and church groups. This month's Teen of the Month is Marcel Terry from Bear Creek High School and the Honorary Teen of the Month is Sara Showalter from Lodi High School. FUNDING: None Required. Don Flynn -- City Manager, Bio for City Council March Teen of the Month Marcel Terry is an outstanding student leader at Bear Creek High School. He has coordinated the Food Drive for his high school and was involved in the Open Door House of Prayer, Boy's and Girl's Club of Stockton, Lao Family of Stockton and the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless. Marcel was involved in the development of the Terry Family Food Bank in Stockton. He assisted in refurbishing the building and developing the agency brochure. He is also a conflict mediator at Bear Creek high and was invited to the National Young Leader's Conference in Washington, D.C. in recognition of this leadership in school and the community. He is also an integral team member of the Bear Creek High varsity basketball team. March Honorary Teen on the Month Sara Showalter is a student at Lodi High School. She was selected as the youth representative from her local church to represent the church at a countywide young ministry. She was active in the 30 -Hour Famine to support world hunger and assisted young children to make sandwiches for the Archway Shelter. She shares her musical talent by playing piano for her local church and is a regular volunteer at the Salvation Army.
