HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - January 6, 1908Public Hall, Lodi, California, Jany. 6, 1908 The Board of Trustees of the City of Lodi convened in the regular session, President Geo. E. Lawrence presiding and the following Trustees being present: F. 0. Hale, C. A. Rich, L. Villinger, Absent: J. M. Blodgett. The minutes of the meeting of Dec. 27, 1907 were read and approved as read. A letter from Gen. Manager, S. B. McLenegan of the Central California Traction Co., stating that he could meet the Board any afternoon after 2 o'clock. PM. was read and filed, and the Clerk instructed to make an appointment with Mr. McLenegan. The report of the City Marshal and the Pound Master for the month of December 1 of 1907 were read, approved and filed. The Report of City Treasurer and of the City Clerk for the Quarter ending Dec. 31, 1907, was read, approved and files. The City Clerk also made a statement of the affairs of the City for the year of 1907. Rev. W. P. Grant, President of the Board of Library Trustees, stated that the matter of a Carnegie Library was progressing most favorably. Mr. Carnage's private secretary, Mr. Jas. Bestram , having made it know to the Board of Library Trustees that Mr. Carnegie would be pleased to donate $9000 for a Library building in Lodi. He had replied to the communication thanking Mr. Carnegie for the offer, and stating that the Board of Trustees would be ready to take whatever action might be necessary in the premises. He presented and filed with the Clerk the report of Secretary E.G. Williams of the Library Trustees, conveying the information that the indebtedness of the Library up to Dec. 1, 1907 was $109.90, and that the amount on hand and actually pledged was $78.50, leaving a shortage of $31.40, which amount he believed would be made up in a few days more. Mr. A. S. Anderson, representing the Dougherty, Whitaker, & Ray Co. addressed the Board saying that his form believed that two licenses would be sufficient He stated that they were willing to pay the saloon license and the real estate, but thought that they should be except from the Hotel license. The matter was referred to be taken up later. A communication from Capt. C. E. Hill, of an Independent Cavalry Co., stating that a company would be organized in Lodi and asking the Board to make an appropriation to equip the same, was read, and the Captain setting forth the reasons why the Board should make an appropriation. The matter was referred to be taken up later. The following applications for building permits were read and granted: F. F. Ivey Wm. McDaniel Frame Barn Private Dwelling 96 A petition asking for the removal of the stairways along the sidewalks of Friedburger and Kaiser's Building on Elm Street was read, and a motion made and seconded that the marshal be instructed to notify Friedburger and Kaiser to remove the obstructions from the sidewalk adjoining their property within thirty days. The motion was carried and it was so ordered. Trustee Rich, the committee appointed to have the water wagon properly housed, reported progress. Trustee Villinger reported that Fire Chief Welch had had the Hose House properly repaired. Trustee Hale reported that the fire bill was here and that the trustees committee requested to decide where it should be placed. He said that Mr. F. G. Cary of the Electric Light Co. had offered to furnish the electricity fee for operating the bill. It was moved, seconded and carried that the bill be placed in the Mission Arch. Freidburger & Kaiser Plow Total Claims Allowed Supplies (Harrow) 16.35 14.00 14.45 1471.57 It was moved, seconded and carried that the hotel license be not imposed upon the Dougherty, Whitaker & Ray Co., while they are paying the saloon and real estate licenses. The Clerk was instructed to reply to Captain C. E. Hill, saying that the Board fmds no authority for making appropriation asked for. The Clerk was instructed to communicate with Mr. H. H. Henderson and arrange for a meeting between him and the Board. Upon motion regularly made, seconded and carried, the Board then adjourned to the call of the President. Attest: J. M.
