The Board of Trustees of the City of Lodi convened in regular
session at 8 o'clock p.m., there being present Trustees Hale, Black,
Keeney and Montgomery. Trustee. Grose absent.
Minutes of the regular adjourned meeting of April 22d were read
and approved.
Under unfinished business the application of R. Gehan for permit
to remodel and repair a building, laid over from April 22d, was taken up,
and upon motion was again laid on the table until the next. regular meet-
ing.
Under the head of communications and notices H. C. Powell's ap-
plication for employment as driver of. one of the street sprinkling wag-
ons, which application was referred to the street committee.
In reply to an inquiry of the City Clerk the internal revenue •
department stated that as the public baths are operated by the municipal-
ity admissions are not subject to war tax.
Correspondence regarding the establishment of a salvage bureau
for benefit of the Red Cross was referred to the City Clerk to be taken
up with the local chapter of the Red Cross for information as to their
desires in the matter.
NEW BUSINESS.
The application of Castle Gammon for -irrigation water for sev-
eral lots in the Barnhart Tract was referred to the Superintendent of
Public Utilities.
A. T.Thomas presented a bid for painting the arch, lamp posts a
and fire hydrants, which was referred to the public utilities committee.
Mrs. A.M.Tower and Mrs. R.S.Fuller appeared before the Board in
the interests of the Parent -Teachers Association and requested the Board
to take the necessary steps toward equipping a children's play ground
in the city park. After discussion the public utilities committee of
the Board was authorized to work in conjunction with the above named as-
sociation with a view to establish a children's play ground.
D. W. Bird, representing the Congregational church, asked per-
mission to place a flag pole at the corner of School street and the
alley in block:12; also asked for permission to change the curb in that
portion of School Street which is being paved in front of the church
property. The matter was referred to the public utilities -committee,
the City Engineer and the contractor.
Superintendent Henning,asked the Board to authorize the pur-
chase of a wireless electric pipe locator from Crane Company of Sacra-
mento. No action was taken.
The superintendent was authorized to sell a quantity of 2x4 pine
lumber which had been used for concrete forms in the pump pit at $15.00
per 1000 feet.
Upon motion or Trustee Montgomery, seconded by Trustee Keeney,
which motion was regularly made, seconded and carried, the following ad-
justments or salaries and wages of city employees were made, to be ef-
fective May 1, 1918:
Common labor in all departments $3.00 per day.
Frank Freshour, public utilities department, $3.50 per day.
George Walker, public utilities department, $4.00 per day.
Drivers with teams, $5.50 per day.
D. N. Whittaker, engineer water works, $105.00 per month.
C. 1. Fowler, engineer water works, $105.00 per month.
G. R. Griffith, engineer water works, $125.00 per month.
Effie Florence, deputy City Clerk, $100.00 per month.
L. P. Barzellotti, City Engineer, *125.00 per month.
J. A. Henning, Superintendent Public Utilities, allowance suf-
ficient to cover cost of oil, gasoline and tires for his automobile.
Health Officer Hopkins asked for and was granted leave of ab-
sence for four days.
Frank Freshour having offered $30 for a building on the Robinett
lot recently purchased by the City, upon motion of Trustee Keeney, sed-
onded by Trustee Montgomery, his offer was accepted.
REPORTS.
Report of the City Marshal for the month of April was read and
ordered filed.
Reports of the City Plumbing Inspector for the months of March
and April were read and ordered filed.
President Hopkins reported that he had investigated the report
of defective sewer at the Pacific Market which had caused frequent cora—
plainto In the past. Superintendent Henning stated. the trouble was
caused by excess of water at times from the Lodi Ice & Cold Storage
plant and that the condition would be remedied at once.
The president of the Health Board made oral report that the
health of the city is good at present, there being but a few cases of
muMps and measles and no places under quarantine.
It was reported the residence of Nelson Mathews on Lodi Avenue
was not connected with the servers, the health officer stating the owner

ad agreed to have the same connected at once.
The following applications; for building permits were referred
to the public utilities committee and the fire chief for investigation:
Quong Fong.Tai, store and rooming house at 24 North Main street.
G. Takeuchi, addition to a building at 30 North Main street.
Building permits were granted to the following;
T.C.Eurson, to remodel building at 119 North Sacramento street.
Mrs.L.K.Boyce, private garage on lot 1, block 1, West Lodi.
F. E. Lowe, to remodel building at 20 West Elm street.
W. D. Voorhies, addition to fruit shed of the Stewart Fruit
Company on lots 9, 10 and 11, block A, Barnhart Tract.
Miscellaneous bills amounting to $6358.35, having been passed
by the auditing co -.=ittee were upon motion of Trustee Hale, seconded by
Trustee Montgomery, allowed and ordered paid.
