The minutes of tee regular meeting of larch 16, 1536 were read and
approved with the following addition: on motion of Councilean draffigna
seconded by Couacilean ..eine, t. -_e minutes of this meeting were amended
to read as follows: (Volume 5, page 308) "Claus ::os. 25796 to 25635
inclusive, in the amount of „12,334.04 as approved by the Finance Coemittee
were a11oeed, said claims including that of Lodi 'Motor Comeany for pay-
ment for two aetomobiles perch -deed under Resolution of award No. 833,
adopted Febru_ry 4, 1336."
Mr. A. J. Craig ?resented a petition for the narrowing of pleasant
Avenue from eighty feet to sixty feet bet:veen Lockeford Street and
Louie :_venue. ..t the order of the :.:ayor this Witter was referred to
the City attorney and the City nngiaeer and the City Attorney was aut::orized
to, obtain an abstract company's report on the status of the.lands bordering
on these streets and on the streets themselves.
There being any persons is attendance in advocation for and in
protest against a suggested closing ordinance for mercantile esta'clistments
originating in the Loci Business Men's Association, Mr. Glenn flast, City
Attorney, presented a sueeested ordinance with a statement that he believed
I: to come within the lines laid down in a similar ordinance adopted In
the town of Yowler. ;Mr. Martinollch of Safeway Stores Incorporated,
asked that the ordinance be adopted as presented by Mr. West with the
exception that the holidays named in Section 2 be those cocmonly recognized
in the City to wit: Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, :armistice
Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years, and at the order of
the Layer the ?reposed ordinance was so amended. Several speakers then
addressed the Couacil both for and against the proposed ordinance as
submitted. It was suggested that the proposed ordinance be voted upon at
the coming City Election and on m -tion of Councilman :Berne, seconded by
Councilman Graffigna, this ordinance No. 220 was introcuced and by tae
same melon laid over for the statutory period of not less than five days
by the following vote:
AYES: Councilmen, ;Seine, Graffigna, Clark, Spooner and Steele
NOES: Counoil.cen, None

Mayor Steele then addressed the Council in regard to the submission
of this ordinance to the people for an advisory vote. This matter was
then discussed at some length and finally the Clerk was instructed to
have the ?reposed Crdinance or the seeme ry thereof published and an
unofficial ballot printed.

was introduced and by the scze motion laid over for the statutory period of
not less than five days.
The City Clerk reported that the provisions of Ordinance No. 211 where-
by delin:uent tax payers were allowed to redeem their property without
payment of dellnuent penalties other than interest, would cease on the
20th of April and that a new ordinance providing for the reaempelon of tax
sales should be introduced and adopted at this meeting. On motion of
Councilman ;;elhe, seceedec by Councilman Graffigna, Ordinance No. 219
entitled "AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR R::D3L TION OF REAL ESTATE SOLD
TO CITY OF L301 FOR D3L:'i':.UE T TAXES DR ASS2SSME:iTS" was introduced and
finally passed, adopted and ordered to print as an emergency ordinance
by the follorin6 vote: AYES: Councilmen, 5'elhe, Eraffigaa, Clark,
Spooner, and Steele. NOES: Councilmen, None. ASSENT: Councilmen, None.

The City Attorney, 151ena Wiest, as lastructed at t:.e :meeting
of %:arch lo, 1.37.3, presented an ordinance regulating the operation of
public deuces in ti.e City of Lodi. After sore little discussion, none
disserti_.g, the ',.eyDr ordered the proposed ordinance laid on the tabld
for conside.,ation.
The Clerk read a letter from the Japenese-American_Citizenst
Le --due of Lodi advising t.e Council of the formation of the Leazie and
of its purpose. At the order of the -layor, the Clerk was instructed to
write a letter tc t. -.e Lec:.rue congratulatiag thea, in the name of the City
Council for to hi„h ideals and objects of their organization and
offering t: -ea t:ie cooperation of tae City Council in any matters that
misht be mutually advantaSeous.
It ap:earino that the local Chapter of the nmerican Red Cross
had organized a Disaster Relief Committee the following resolution was
introduced on motion of Counciiran Clark, seconded by Councilman i4eiae.

In times of disaster;
RESOLVED, ALSO, that this City Council hereby tenders any
aid that it may be able to offer to t:e said American Red Cross, in its
efforts to Jerfect a local organizatlon which will be prepared and will
make prepar:a leas to meet any emergency in tines of disaster or pestilence.
The foreg3in, Resolution No. 841 was then passed and adopted
by the follo•r,ing assenting votes: Clark, ''Weche, Craffig na, Spooner and

The monthly report of the Chief of Police for the month of March
and that of the City Pound -caster for the same period, and the quarterly
report of the Lodi Volunteer F_ -e Department were received, read and
ordered filed.

str_ctures to cost a30,OCO.00 were allowed and ordered graited.

motion of Councilzar Spooner, seconded by Councilman .ieihe.

Yr. Clifford B. _uil, _eores_._t;-�tive for the Si,;-"- Oil Company,
asked the Council as to w:;at action had been takan as to the sinirg
of _nau^1 contracts for the :urcaase of gesoline. Lt the direction
of t;.e Layor this matter was again referred to the City Clerk w_th
the direction that :le consult with. the Superintendent of Public Utilities
aid execute the necessary contracts at once.
On motion of Councilman fieihe, seconded by Councilman Clark, it .,:as
decided t'aat the City would allow $00.00 in the annual budget in the
su�oort of the Band of the Lodi Union Hl.�h School. Yotion carried.
Lir. John A. Henning addressed the Council in re.E;?rd to the
necessity of a sewer line in Lockeford Street to serve some new
buildings being erected on the intersection of Lockeford Street and
Pleasant _*venue.
Ccuncil_an Clark asked that the old mower be taken from the
eastside Park to the Lake ?ark stating that it would be of more use
at the Lake t::an at 11 ole S•-uare.
Mayor Steele stated that he believed it to be to t. -,e 'best policy
to leve the oiening of the Kunlcipal Baths to the Committee on Parks
with full oower to act.
