HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - July 17, 19334i COUNCIL CHAMBERS - • CITY COUNCIL CITY HALL -- CITY OF LOCI Monday, July 17, 1933 This regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Lodi was called to order by the Mayor at 8:00 o'clock P.M. on the date first abo^e written, Councilmen Clark, Eeagle, Spooner, Weihe and Steele (44yor) present, none absent. The minutes of the last meeting held July 3rd were read, approved as read and so endorsed by the Mayor. Street Superintendent Dougherty addressed the Council regarding the dusty condition of the E & W alley in Block 7 of the original City. On account of lack of funds, no action was taken at this time. The Clerk read several letters from the League of Cali- fornia Municipalities in relation to the coming state -:vide convention of the League to be held at Santa Cruz and relat- ing to the proceedings necessary before the City could obtain use of pro -rated gasoline tax moneys from the Department of Public Works. On motion of Councilman Spooner,. Keagle second, the Clerk was instructed to get in touch with Mr. R.E. Pierce, the State Highway Engineer for District "%", who would have approval of the proceedings when undertaken, and obtain his ad -ice. The City Assessor applied by letter for an extension of one month in which to complete the assessment roll and this extension was granted by the adoption of the following: RESOLUTION NO. 682 I W.F..MREAS, the City Assessor, has applied for additional time within which to complete the Assessment Roll for the tax year 1933-34, stating that it is impossible to complete the said roll within the time prescribed by Secion 1 of Ordinance No. 129; BE IT RESOLVED, that the said City assessor be, and he is hereby granted the additional time of thirty-one days from and after the first day of August, 1933 in which to com- plete the said assessment Roll. BE IT ALSO RESOLVED, that the time set by Section 1 of Ordinance No. 167 prescribing that the City Council shall sit as a Board of Equalization on the second Mondy in august be and the same is heraby set at the second Aaonday in September of the year 1933, in as much as the assessment roll will not be 1 prepared in time for meetings if held on the said second 11onday in August 1933. COUNCIL CHAMBERS - - CITY COUNCIL CITY HALL - - CITY OF LOCI The City Clerk reported that he had attended the meet- ing of California Municipal Utility Association in San Fran- cisco on July 7th and that on his return, he had received in- structions from the kayos to contact our members of the State Legislature at their homes by letter, apprising them of the opposition of the City to any attempt to tax the receipts of Municipal Utilities. Such letters had been written and copies of the Resolution adopted at the above meeting forwarded to Messrs. Crittenden and Thorp. On motion of Councilman Spooner, Weihe second, the action of the Mayor and the Clerk as above were ratified and confirmed. Amy L. Boynton, Librarian of the Lodi Public Library filed a summary of her annual report and the same was accepted. The City Clerk and the City Treasurer each presented his quarterly report for the quarter ended June 30, 1933 and both were ordered accepted and filed. Mayor Steele reported that numerous complaints regard- ing the conditions in "Hooverville" had been brought to his attention and on motion of Councilman Beagle, Spooner second, the Chief of Police was ordered to have all the buildings and shacks on the premises east of the Southern Pacific main line tracks and north of Lockeford Street vacated, where they were occupied by people having no authority to live on the premises. Such abatement of this nuisance to be had immediately. Bills in the amount of 47,926.16 as approved by the Pinance Committee were ordered allowed on motion of Councilman Clark, iveihe second. At 8:48 o'clock P.M. the Council was resolved into Committee of the 'Whole to consult with its Attorney and Engineer, returning to open session at 9.45 o'clock P.M. when adjournment was had at the order of the Mayor, none dissent- ing.
