RECOMMENDED ACTION: None required. This report is made to the City Council in accord-
ance with Resolution 97-166, adopted October 15, 1997.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: On October 15, 1997, the City Council adopted Resolution 97-166,
which authorized staff to receive formal bids for 40 each 55 -foot
Class 2 wood utility poles, and to award to the lowest responsible
bidder. Such action was necessary to meet the Electric Utility
Department's planned December 1 start date for construction of the 12kV power line extension from the
Industrial Substation to Cherokee Lane.
The advertisement for bids was published on October 7, 1997; the following bids were received, and
opened on October 17:
L. D. McFarland Co., Tacoma WA $21,420.70
IntraLine, Inc., Burlingame CA $21,420.70
J H Baxter Co., San Mateo, CA $21,636.20
Koppers Co., Denver CO $22,368.90
L. D. McFarland and Intral-ine were advised that the tie bid would be resolved by a coin toss (as
specified in the bidding documents) and both agreed to be bound by the outcome. The coin toss,
conducted on October 17, 1997 by the Purchasing Officer and witnessed by the Deputy City Clerk,
resulted in L. D. McFarland being awarded the bid.
