HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - July 17, 1940ZUt, CCUNCIL CHAMB''RS - - CITY COUNCIL CITY HALL - - CITY Of LODI. ?3DbM3DAY, JULY 17, 1940 This regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Lodi was called to order by the Mayor at 8 o'clock P.M. on the day and at the place first above written, Councilmen Bull, Graffigna, Riggs,iWeihe and Steele present, none absent. In the absence of the City Clerk, Effie L. Griffin, his Deputy acted as Clerk of the Council. The minutes of the last meeting, held July 3, 1940, were read, approved as read and so endorsed by the Mayor. Yr W. L. Irsy addressed the Council in regard to his application for a varience permit at 332 East Locust Street, which application had been denied by the City Planning Commission. On motion of Councilman Weihe, Riggs second, it was directed that a permit be issued to Irey Brothers on the filing of adequate plans and specifications. Notion carried without record vote. George Grater of Lodi Lions Club again appealed for abatement of the charges now made for swimming at Lake Park for young people. Mayor Steele stated that the matter was still being investigated and as over 509 of the income of the park was from swimming privile4ges to children of school age, some system would have to be devised whereby those granted freedom from charges could be checked as worthy. Captain Charles White applied for fire hose at the Lodi Armory and on motion of Councilman Bull, Weihe second, the Fire Chief was inst- ructed to purchase the same. A letter was received from the Retail Merchants Bureau of the Lodi District Chamber of C— roe thanking the Council for use of Lodi Lake Park for its successful Independence Day celebration. Fred Nies applied for the position of caretaker at the Stadium. Lodi Lions Club, by letter, asked the Council to endorse the plan of making the Lind Airport into a civilian training unit under the National Defense Act, transmitting copies of a resolution of that Club to the same effect. On account of lack of information as to the means by which the Council could further this project, action was delayed until the neat Council meeting. A letter was received from officials of the City of Santa Clara thanking the Fire Department for courtesies extended in allowing them to inspect local fire fighting apparatus. A call for the bi-monthly meeting of the Central Valley Division of the League of California Cities to be held in Stockton on Tuly 19th was read. Sever_ City officials expressed their desire to attend. ',uarterly Reports of the City Clerk and City Treasurer for the quarter ended Juke 3m, 1940, were receited, read and ordered filed. The application for a business license from C.Calente laid over from the meeting of July 3, 1940, was ordered granted, the same having been approved by the Chief of Police. The application of Terry Johnson was again held over for further information. 3,isiness license applications Nos 1150 to 1154 were considered by the Council, also a:plication No. 1149. Application No. 1153 was laid over pending the receipt of further information. Application No. 1149 was denied as applicant proposed to conduct business in a residence district. On the recommendation of City Attorney Glenn West and on motion of Couacil,nan Neihe, seconded by Councilman Graffigna, a compromise of the 01,191,72 water and electric bill of Otto Barth was authorized for 50% of the amount due. Tae City Clerk was directed to advertise for bids on flood -light reflectors at the Lodi Stadium on motion of Councilman Riggs, Bull second. r The Council gave no formal approval of the proposal that the City finance purchase of uniforms by newly appointed policemen, though no objections were offered. The matter of street lights on Tokey Street was again brought before the Council by Councilman Riggs but no action taken until inform- ation as to available funds could be secured. Cn the reco=endation of Councilman Hull and on motion of Councilman Graffigna, Weihe second, the Chief of the Fire Department was authorized to attend a school of instruction for Fire Chiefs to be held in Tacama, Washington on august 1st to 3rd and also to attend the annual -- convention of the International Fire Chiefs at Spokane on Adgust 5th to 8th, his actual expenses to be.defrayed by the City. On motion of Councilman Ib ihe, the City Council then adjourned. Deputy City Clerk and ex -officio Deputy Clerk of the City Council. The foregoing minutes of a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Lodi were read at a subsequent meeting of said Council held on the 7th day of August,1940 and approved without correction.
