BSO_L' OL of Intention No. 1523 adopted Yuly 18,1951. Fred N. Saie- ii, President of the Board of Trustees of Lodi School District sated that the Board of Trustees rade mo objection to abandoning Sturla Street as the widening of Pleasant Ave-ue by tue ty feet along properties to be acquired from R. P. Barbour and W. T. Beckman, together with the i.* _ova eht of the alley, ( also armed to be made by Barbour-Bec:h), mould offset any edvanta•ge of Sturla Street; in fact, by closing Sturia Street, the Sc=oot would obtain a compact area immediately west o: the !resent Neefreen School buildings. Ee asked that the City maintain the widened portion of Pleasant .venue and the above alley after they had been acquired and improved by the sellers of the property. _- Reuben P. Pott, member of the Board of Trustees of Lodi School District , elaborated on Ur SSiekerman's remarks, emphasizing that exceptional growth of the school required that the District _ocuire atuitional lands for kindergarden and primary pupils. gorge D. rblenske, City :ire Chief, argued against the street closing on account of the length of the block. He was informed that __ovision had been made for locating a fire hydrant on Lee Avenue, midway between Tokay and Chestnut Streets but still main— tained that confusion urog1d exist oaring to breaks in street numbers .mere no intersection :mould exist. _ Lkesrs ?a'eer, Bender and Fink, pyo had protested the street closing again repeated 2 guments'favoring their stand, holding that if Sturla Street remained open, it would give sore space that the -District :•ould acquire, after the twenty -foot nide strip had been severed along Pleasant !Avenue. Lh ycr Tolliver stated that the City Council's interest Tas in following the plans of the School District for the beet interests of the schools. Council. -an Rirhi then moved that the Council proceed with the vacation proceedings in that this ratter had been favorably considered by the City Planning Cunuission and the Schcol Board and such evidence as had been presented warranted this action. .t the moment, there ,as no second to Counc1i an9 Rint's notion and the Lcyor ellowied debate to continue. Superintendent.of Schools Leroy Nichols told of the District's efforts to acquire this property from the previous owners nithout success, and,- if this site is not acquired, another location in the Southwest part of Lodi or in the vicinity of Lodi v111 have to be purchased; the =arbour -Beckman property is th'e last chance that the District can have to obtain land in the vicinity of Needher School. Councilman Haskell then summarized the evidence and contentions presented, stating thet the School Board should positively state that this is the only property obtainable suitable to its use and that the street closing is essential to, their use of the property. Councilman Rinn: This is a decision for the City Council to make as to the public good. Trustee Batt: The School Board is interest- ed in obtaining the most suitable property at the best urice.. • At 9:45 P.:_.
