HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - August 24, 1955440 CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF LODI COUT..CIL CHAMBER, CITY FALL AUGUST 24, 1955 Pursuant to the adjournment taken from its meeting of August 17, 1955, the City Council of the City of Lodi met at 8:00 o'clock p.m. of Wednesday, August 24, 1955; Councilmen Fuller, Hughes, Mitchell, Richey and Robinson (Mayor) present; none absent. City Manager Weller and City Attorney Mullen absent. COMMUNICATIONS CLAIM FOR Claim from Cal -Farm Insurance Company of Stockton for DAMAGE damage to oats and barley crop of Earl H. Swain allegedly caused by fire from the City Dump on June 22, 1955• Amount of Claim: $396.50. The claim was referred to the City's insurance carrier on motion of Councilman. Richey, Mitchell second. THANKS FROM. Letter from the Lodi Trailer Club thanking the City TRAILER CLUB Manager and City Council for use of Lodi Lake Pirk as a trailer camp site. REPORTS OF THE CITY MANAGER YELLOW CURBS Memorandum from the Engineering Department stating IN FRONT OF that a request had been received from Mr. James NEEDHAM AND Linn, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, asking NICHOLS the City to paint the curb yellow on the west SCHOOLS side of South Pleasant Avenue in front of Needham School Annex for a distance of approximately 115 feet and in front of the LeRoy Nichols School for approximately 25 Feet. It was reported that the C: ief of Police had no objections to such markings. Councilman Hughes, Richey second, motioned that the request be granted. Motion carried. BID ON A tabulation of the only bid received on construc- HA_''T LANs, tion of Ham Lane, from the Claude C. Wood Company, CONSTRUCTION was received from the City Engineer. The total REJECTED amount of the bid was $15,001.60 and the City Engineer's estimate was $9,6+5.00. The City En- gineer recommended that the bid be rejected and the work done by force account. On motion of Councilman Mitchell, Fuller second, the Council rejected the bid and ordered the work done by force account. 1955-56 The City Clerk then stated that the 1955-56 tax TAX RATE rate should be set and that the City Manager recommended that the rate be the same as the pre - RES. 41879 vious year. On motion of Councilman Hughes, Richey second, the City Council adopted Resolu- tion No. 1879 setting the tax rate for the General Fund at $ .82 and for the Library Fund at $ .18. PLANNING COMMISSION PU?LIC HEARING A report was received from the Planning Commission SET FOR stating that the request of Ted Schneider for TOKAY GARDENS rezonin' of the north ten acres in the Tokay REZONIidG Gardens Subdivision from R-1 to C-1 had received a tie vote from the Planning Commission and there- fore the Commission was referring the matter to - the Council without recommendation. On motion of Councilman `^,itchell, Richey second, public hearing on the rezoning was set for September 7, 1955. 44(i Minutes of August 24, 1955, continued. ZONING The City Clerk presented the following report COXMITTEE from the Zoning Committee: REPCRTS 1. Approved request by Reuben Fandrich, 529 Olive Court, for the front yard encroachment of 6� feet. 2. ADDroved request of L. J. Williams, 501 North Cherokee Lane for front and side yard encroachment for purpose of building a swimming pool. 3. Approved a request for a Use Permit from Mr. Christian Nies, 610 South Fairmont Avenue, to enlarge existing Rest '.come in R-2 zone. 4. Approved request from the First Methodist Church for a Front yard encroachment to enable construction of Sunday School classrooms to the west of the exist- ing church building. ELECTRIC The City Clerk then read a memorandum from the RATES City :Manager relative to adoption of a new electric rate ordinance to offset the prospective increase in the costs of bulk power purchased from P. G. & E. and to re -align existing City rates, which were established in 1936, in conformity with modern- day use of electricity. A draft of such an or- dinance was presented to the Council. Rates are being proposed which would be 10% below comparable rates of P. G. & E. The City Coancil expressed itself as being pleased with the City ;Manager's elucidation of the subject. Councilman Hughes commended the City 'Manager for his efforts in negotiating with the P. G. & E. for equitable bulk power rates. CITY 'Mayor Robinson reminded the other members of the BIRTHDAY Council of the City "birthday celebration" being riven by the Chamber of Commerce on August 25, at 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
