MEETING DATE: November 19, 1997 PREPARED BY: Scott Kenley, Fire Chief RECOMMENDED ACTION: PRESENTATION BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Earlier this year, members of the Lodi Fire Department decided to put a team together to compete in the Firefighter Combat Challenge. The Combat Challenge is a series of physical events performed one after the other for total time. Members compete for individual and team qualifying. Members of the team from Lodi Fire Department were Jason Meyer, Joe Hansen, Mike Tecklenburg, and Jeff Larson. Mike Woznick, also a member of the team, works for the Woodbridge Fire District. After months of training the team competed in early September at Cal Expo during the California State Fair. The team competed well and placed 5th in the state thus qualifying for the national competition in November at Las Vegas. They also placed 69th nationally with their combined time. This event proved to be a valuable learning experience. The training increased and techniques became more refined. Recently the team competed in the World Firefighter Combat Challenge competition. The improvements were substantial, with all members improving their times from between 20 to 40 seconds. They competed in the semi finals with the top fifteen teams advancing to the World Competition Finals. Seventeen teams received byes from winning regional competitions, with two teams remaining to compete, the team was in 15th place. One of the remaining teams bettered their time by .21 seconds and another team's readjusted time placed them in 17th place, thus eliminating them from the finals. Jason Meyer and Mike Woznick broke the two minute time, thus qualifying them for the individual World Firefighter Combat Challenge finals. In order to publicly recognize these individual, I would like to propose we honor them with a congratulations of their achievement. SK/vp 4 4 / /- Scott Scott W. Kenley Fire Chief APPROVED: H.
