AGENDA TITLE: Approve Letter of Support for Lange Twins Winery Grant Application with the
California Energy Commission to Install an EcoVolt Wastewater Treatment Project
MEETING DATE: January 5, 2016
PREPARED BY:
City Clerk
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve letter of support for Lange Twins Winery grant application
with the California Energy Commission to install an EcoVolt
Wastewater Treatment Project.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Mayor was requested to submit a letter in support of the Lange
Twins Winery grant application with the California Energy
Commission to install an EcoVolt Wastewater Treatment Project.
This project allows for technology to clean the process water,
produce biogas for renewable energy, achieve significant energy efficiencies, and return potable water to
the winery, which has the potential to save millions of gallons of water. The Lange Twins Winery has
been at the forefront of sustainability innovation, and this technology would generate positive public
relations for Lodi in the wine and agricultural industry.
The proposed letter of support is attached for Council's review.

The City of Lodi is very excited to learn about and offer our support for the EPIC grant
with the California Energy Commission to install an EcoVolt wastewater treatment project
at the Lange Twins Winery. As you may know, Randall Lange and his family have been
sustainability leaders for several generations, not just for the Lodi -Woodbridge area, but
for the California wine community as well.
The California wine community has always been conscious of water use, both in growing
grapes and producing wine, but over the past several years the drought has pushed
members to find creative ways to use even less water. The EcoVolt project, with its
potential to save millions of gallons of water by reusing process water back in the winery,
will be a very important demonstration to other California wineries on what is actually
possible in the way of water reuse and energy efficiency.
The Lange Twins Winery, built in 2006, utilized PG&E's Savings by Design program to
incorporate many energy efficiency measures into the building from the ground up,
capping the construction off with 1,064 kWs of solar power. Mr. Lange's vision and
commitment to future generations have inspired many other members of the California
wine community to incorporate similar energy efficiency and renewable energy measures
into their own winery operations. We are sure the EcoVolt project will inspire others to
take similar action at their own wineries.
The EcoVolt installation allows technology to clean the process water, produce biogas for
renewable energy, achieve significant energy efficiencies, and return potable water to the
winery.
As Mayor of Lodi, I will be honored to support this project.
Sincerely,
Mark Chandler
