AGENDA TITLE: Provide Direction to Staff regarding City Support for Amgen Tour of California Bid
MEETING DATE: July 22, 2014
PREPARED BY: City Manager
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Provide direction to staff regarding City support for Amgen Tour of
California bid.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Amgen Tour of California is a nationally -televised professional
race spread out over eight days across the State of California. A
coalition of local wine grape growers, hospitality businesses and
wineries is proposing to bring the race to Lodi. A "bid" to host the Tour is due on July 29, 2014 for the
May 2015 race. The group is requesting that the City support the bid by agreeing up front to
1) cooperate with the tour in issuing encroachment permits; 2) funding the cost of the police overtime;
and 3) covering the rental cost for the use of Hutchins Street Square as the race staging area. Police
staff has attended several stages of the event, and based on their research, estimated a $25,000
overtime cost to cover the event. Staff anticipates lost Hutchins Street Square revenue to be minimal
since a Lodi stage would occur if at all, mid -week. The coalition will itself be responsible to raise another
$100,000 to $200,000 to cover the cost of room and board for the rolling city that makes up the race
entourage.
Staff believes that bringing the Tour to Lodi would provide a unique opportunity to advertise who we are
and what we have to offer, both in terms of television coverage and in terms of the entrepreneurs who
take the week to follow the race. Moreover, Police overtime costs can be covered in the existing
economic development budget through savings associated with a partial year vacancy in the business
development position.
FISCAL IMPACT: $25,000 in police overtime costs
FUNDING AVAILABLE: Economic Development budget
