ALLOCATION OF FUNDS
APPROVED FOR CATHODIC
PROTECTION OF WASTE-
WATER LIFT STATIONS The City Council approved an appropriation of $15,000 from;,
the Wastewater Capital Outlay Reserve for the installation
CC -20 of impressed current cathodic protection on the City's
CC -47 wastewater lift stations.
Council was apprised that, early in the summer of 1957,
while on routine inspection, City wastewater maintenance
personnel found holcs in the steel wail of the Mokelurine
Village Wasteivater Lift Station. The floor of this station
is approximately 25 feet below the ground. A corrosion
specialist was called in to evaluate all five of the City's
lift stations. Their evaluation indicated that the
standard passive corrosion protection installed with the
stations (buried magnesium anodes) would not provide
long-term protection for the steel structures. Their
recommendation was that the City begin a program of
installing impressed current cathodic protection devices on
the stations-, starting with :the-Mokelunine Village Station:
The requested amount ($15,000) will provide for a standard
design for the stations and installation by City forces at
all five locations. The work would be done by City
electricians over the next two years.
It was recor.riended this allocation be approved as`. means
toward protecting these facilities. The cost to replace'a
corroded lift station shell would likely be near $100,000.

current budget:
PROJECT DESCRIPTION & JUSTIFICATION
Wastewater Lift Station Cathodic Protection
ESTIMATED COST
Design $ 3,000
A corrosion specialist (Villalobus & Associates) Installation 12,000
recently completed a study on the rive wastewater lift Total $15000
stations. The study was done because holes were found '
in the Mokelumne Village Station. (See Special
Allocation dated June 26, 1487.)
The study recommended installation of impressed cut -rent cathodic protection devices
at four of the five stations and indicated the work could be done on a staged basis
(one station per year).
After discussion with the consultant, we recommend an account for the total work be
established and the work be done by City forces over the next few years. The
consultant will provide plans and a bill of materials for each station. Utility
Department electricians will do the work as time permits. Thea nt should be
sufficient to do all five stations as we know the fiftAon wil V
ed e work
eventually. \ w
