Assistant Planner and Planning Commissioner Joanne Hoffman SPECIAL MERIT ANARO STOCXTON SAVINGS & LOAN - 1150 West Xettleman Lane Owner - Stockton Savings & Loan Architect Presater & Bisho., Architects The Stockton Savi-ngs and Loan on "Xettleman Lane has been selected for a Special Merit Award by the design awards committee for the Beckman House Renovation. The project was cited by the committee as a,.strikingly successful renovation and preservation of a local land - Plaque mark. The architects were able to achieve two major requirements of their client. The fi-rst was to create.a pleasant and functional working space for the operations of the savings and loan and the second was both to preserve the appearance and character of the original Beckman House anti to create a striking corporate symbol. With the careful selection of building materials, landscaping and design, they have successfully blended the old with the new. The result is a superb add-i,tt-on to the City of Lodi. CERTIFICATES COMMERCIAL/RETAIL ELLIS CAR TRASH RMODEL -- 820 South Cherokee Lane Owner - Lance EZZs Architect - Preszler & ft*shop, Architects The committee selected the Ellis Car Wash as an example of an excellent commercial remodeling that visually upgrades the Cherokee Lane neighbor- hood of which it is a part. The design blends colors, planting and building material to create a pleasant exterior resulting in a very attractive project. HONORABLE MENTION MERVYN'S-FRY'S % VfNEYARD SHOPPING CENTER LANDSCAPING & SITE PLAN Hutchins Street and XettZeman Lane Owners . - Pry's Food Store Rick Barry, if r 2g e r Mervyn's John Meta, lfanver Vineyard Shopping Center Greg Meyers, ers, Allan: ; y er Architects - James Foug, AIA -1- The committee selected the Mervyn's-Fry's/Vineyard Shopping Center as an example of how the -use of landscaping and design features can enhance the appearance of a large project. The use of the greenery around the perimeter and in the parking lot planters help soften the extensive asphalt areas required for a major commercial facility. With proper care and maintenance, the.landscaping should mature, -with the trees providing natural summer shade and helping to reduce the solar.heat buildup in the shopping center. COMMERCIAL/OFFICE PLEASANT AVENUE BUSINESS OFFICE - 222 West Lockeford Street Owner - Bob Morris and Larry WeneZZ .Architect - Morris & WeneZZ, AIA The commi-ttee selected this project for its overall design excellence. The committee was impressed with the attractive architectural design and the use of exterior building materials that help blend -the build ng . Plaque in with the surrounding neighborhood. The committee also noted that the use of curved sidewalk to preserve the beautiful mature street trees and the° pleasacnt interior courtyard. GRAHAN DENTAL OFFICE - 1208 WEST 210XAY owner - Dr. Craig Grahw.. Architect - Lawson-Itaya-RepaZin, AIA The committee selected this project for combining different building materials in a creative and interesting design. The committee was also impressed.. with; the use of landscaping to enhance the overall building appearance. HONORABLE MENTION HEN7XGM?1REISWIC OFFICE BUILDING - 8 South Hutchins Omer - Jerry Heminger and Scotty Reiswg Architect - Morris & WeneZZ, AIA The committee selected this building as an example of good site utilization. The building site Is extremely small and is bordered by existing uses. The designers were able to produce an office/apartment combination and still provide parking and landscaping. Blends in well with surrounding buildings. -2- a4KS APRTMNT COMPLEX - 835 West Barney Lane O. -mer - F. P. I. Cormunri ty Developers Architect - -Danielian, Noon, ILC & Associates 0 Thecommitteeselected this project for its overall site design. Not only does the layout of the apartment complex create an open Plaque uncrowded feeling, but the project is also very well landscaped. with many of the original oak trees preserved. The project designers have also provided residentis with recreational facilities. HOND`RA4LE MENTION WINCHESTER OAKS - 2424, 2510 and 2516 Winchester Drive Omer - Clark & McGrath Construction Company Architect - John .Aguirre, AIA f This project was selected for the architectural design of the building.. The committee was impressed with the varied roof and wall lines of these units apart from the usual boxy apartment look. Careful site design also preserved most of the existing on-site oak trees which were incorporated i nt.00--the I:andscap i ng . INDUSTRIAL PCP WAREHOUSE - 835 South Stockton Street Owner - Pacific Coast Producers Architect - Modern Steel Structures This project was selcted for the use of color and landscaping to help softn the appearance of a very large metal building. Although the landscaping is not yet mature, eventually it will help reduce the massive scale of the warehouse. HONORABLE MENTION WEST WAREHOUSE - 104 West Turner.Road Owner - Stanley Herastein Architect - Modern Steel Structures The committee felt that this building was a good example of the use of color and super graphics to create a pleasing visual effect. The selection of exterior color and the bold painted strip used to accent the building set this project apart from r-Dst industrial structures. -3- ,A_J; 1981 SPARC DESIGN AWARDS The SPARC Design Awards are presented annually to honor well designed projects that have been constructed in the City of Lodi. The awards are designed to recognize the efforts of building owners and designers to enhance the appearance of the City and to encourage builders of future projects to do the same. The award recipients are selected by an Awards Committee selected by the SPARC Committee. This year's Committee was made up of the following persons: BOB MURPHY - City Councilman JOANNE HOFFMAN - Planning Commissioner PAT ROBISON - American Assoc. of University Women (AAUW) DICK CORY - Lodi Art Center This year there are 10 projects which were selected to receive awards. Three of these projects were selected for special plaques, and the remaining 7 selected to receive certificates.
