RES. NO. 85-156 Council was iuirormed that the Lakewood School
Principal, Mr. Garcia, notified Public Works
staff that he would like to replace a portion
of the loading zone with a no parking zone
adjacent to the school crosswalk located on the
south leg of the Hahr-n Lane and Kirkwood Drive
intersection.
A resolution was adopted in June 1979
establishing a loading zone on Ham Lane
adjacent to the school. At that time
trucks were making daily stops on Ham Lane
and parents were unloading and loading their
children, also. Currently, most trucks are
using the parking lot, but the parents are
still using this area to unload and load
their children.

COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
No Parking Zone on Ham Lane at Lakewood Elementary School
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council approve the replacement of a portion
of the loading zone on Ham Lane adjacent to Lakewood School with a no parking
zone.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Lakewood School principal, Mr. Garcia, notified
Public Works staff that he would like to replace a portion of the loading zone
with a no parking zone adjacent to the school crosswalk located on the south leg
of the Ham Lane and Kirkwood Drive intersection. (See Exhibit A).
A resolution was adopted in June 1979 establishing a loading zone on Ham Lane
adjacent to the school. At that time trucks were making daily stops on Ham Lane
and parents were unloading and loading their children, also. Currently, most
trucks are using the parking lot, but the parents are still using this area to
unload and load their children.
Staff recommends replacing twenty feet of the unloading and loading zone, south
of the crosswalk, with a no parking zone. The school safety patrol guards are
having difficulty seeing the vehicles traveling northbound when a vehicle is
temporarily parked just south of the crosswalk.'' Staff also recommends replacing
twenty feet of unloading and loading zone, north of the crosswalk, with a no
parking zone. Vehicles tend to turn into the crosswalk in order to unload and
load passengers in the yellow zone just north of the crosswalk.
The principal would prefer the no limit zone (approximately 3 spaces) to remain
the same. The ten feet of unloading and loading zone, north .of the proposed no
parkino zone should be removed. This area can continue to be used by parents for
short term use.
