BACKGROUND - Council authorized staff to prepare specifications for Ford LTD station wagons with 302 V8 cu. in. gasoline engine, and Chevrolet Impala station wagons with 350 cu. in. diesel engine. We did not solicit formal bids for Checker Cab as there is only one supplier. Instead, we obtained telephone quotations. Those quotations are: Gasoline $10,195 Diesel $12,000 The engines are the same as the Chevrolet engine and the cost is considerably greater than any other quotation. It is recom- mended we not purchase a Checker Cab. continued --- Page Two The difference in cost of a diesel and gasoline equipped vehicle is $368.53. The question then is, do the economics of diesel justify the initial capital cost? Assuming 25,000 miles per year, per vehicle, price of gasoline $1.30 per gallon and diesel $1.10 per gallon; and miles per gallon -15 for gasoline and 18 for diesel, the potential savings will be: Gasoline: 25,000 . 15 mpg = Diesel: 1,666.67 gallons x 1.30 $2,166.67 25,000 L. 18 mpg = 1,388.89 gallons x 1.10 $1,527.78 $2,166.67 cost for gasoline 1,527.78 cost for diesel $ 638.89 In addition, we can anticipate approximately $150 per unit savings in shop maintenance costs. The savings then in the first year will be greater than the difference in the initial price of the diesel powered vehicle. It is recommended that we order the following: 6 - 1982 Chevrolet Impala station wagons - Model 1 BL 35 350 cu. in. diesel engine 3 speed automatic transmission Power Steering Power Brakes Air Conditioning with manual temperature control Heavy Duty Suspension California Emission Equipment Tinted Glass - Complete Outside Left and Right Hand Remote Control Mirror Vinyl Side Moldings Heavy Duty Battery Color - White Cin t L ..i l w. -- JE L.
