Budget: 1982/83 Fund: Federal Revenue Sharing DATE: October 13, 1983 Amount Budgeted: $342,000 Bid Opening Date: October 12, 1983 SUBJECT: "Shady Acres Pump Station Reconstruction" RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council award the contract for the above project to R. Goold 6 Son in the amount of $248,692.00. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: This project i.icludes the construction of a rein- forced concrete pump structure, installation of new pumps and controls and construction of a flow metering structure and headwall on the WID Canal. The pump station will replace the existing two small stations which will remain in service during construction. The new station will help relieve flooding in the Cabrillo Circle and Charleston Way areas. The Woodbridge irrigation District approved the plans and specifications at its October 4, 19C3 meeting. Modification of the existing Agreement will come before the City Council hopefully in November as a separate item. Plans and specifications for this project were approved on September 21, 1983. In reviewing the estimate, it appears not enough allowance was made for the cramped working conditions and time of year (winter) during which the construction must take place. APPROVED: HENRYA. FrcItz November 9, 1983 C! i )' C �,P 1 n�?r Water and Wastewater Equipment 801 Mahler Road, Suite 204 Burlingame, CA 94010 Attention: Bill Needham Gentlemen: SUBJECT: Shady Acres Pump Station The City Manager has asked us to review and comment on your letter of November 3. 1983 regarding two submersible pumps for the Shady Acres Pump Station project. We do have a fairly restrictive specification - we want high quality equip- ment; but more importantly, we want equipment tha• can be readily serviced and locally supported. We asked the Contractor about all the materials and subcontractors to be used on the project, as we do any project of this nature. He indicated that his low bid on the submersible pumps was from PALO, not DAVIS/EMU. However, all the manufacturer's prices were fairly close, and he had no strong prefer- ence as to what to furnish. We indicated that we had not worked with the PACO equipment and would have to carefully review the submittal. We told him that previous pump station projects LIMFlygt p s, and we were happy with those. We told him that we had revie a /EMU submittal on a previous project and while the pump met the spec fications, the manufac- turer's support services did not. We also indicated that thst was over a year ago and the situation may have changed. We reiter..ted that we would give any submittal serious consideration. Recently the Contractor told us verbally that he will be submitting Flygt pumps since the total cost differential was very small. He said if we had had no preference whatsoever, he would have submitted PACO and that he would ordinarily submit whatever an agency pr6ferred if the price difference was not substantial. l �X 10 it lV`^O 4� Water and Wastewater Equipment November 9, 1983 Page 2 To date we have net received a submittal on the submersible pumps.
