Pine St. Lodi, CA. 95240 Dear Councilmen: REC iVE ger August 79 198ALIC IVI f E Ciry CLERK SATE: I was disappointed as I- read the article this morning regarding some city councilmens feelings about a new third full-time supervisor for the recreations department. First, Mr. DeBenedetti would not be suggesting the position if he did not feel it was necessary, second, if we are going to continually annex new areas into Lodi we must have something for those people to do in the form of recreational activities, third, the staff is dreaming if it does not believe that there already exists a professional softball organization, and if you don't believe it ask anyone who plays every year and expects it to continue without hassle. I can say that it did lose some of its Excitement this past summer when games were scheduled 7-8 days apart, the lulls between games did take away some of the team spirit. We are paying someone, (nothing personal suggested), a generous amount of money to develop the community center, and that is still a dream forjthe most part, it seems rather irresponsible to balk at paying a third full-time recreation supervisor especially when a large part of that salary exists. Although, the description seemed to imply the person woul4be largely involved with softball, I am sure the other responsibilities mentioned would take up any slack time. I shudder at the thought of private organizations coming in to take over the recreation programs* v ou would be asking for a whole new "ball game." The citizens of Lodi are proud of their recreation department and the community volunteers active in every sport proves their dedication. Why would you even consider the remote possibility of giving up your recreation programs? With all the flack you are getting in other areas of city business, the efficient recreation program gives you a plus from the community. You could save the city thousands of dollars if the two sides of the Green Belt Initiative would hold a softball tournament to decide the outcome. I am sure if you are not aware of the city spirit in the softball program, you could attend and see it in action. Page Two August 7, 1981 This past summer 1 did see Mayor McCarty attend a young boys softball game showing -his support and interest. If you question the reality of Councilmen Pinkerton statement that keeping kids busy, (in a positive way), keep them out of jail, take time and visit any local detention facility and ask those young men and women if they were involved in sports of any kind. Loli has not exhausted its sports programs with citys' starting women's soccor teams, T -ball, etc, the sports program should be expanded and definitely not stiffled at this point. Thank you for your time, Sincerely, '-1)U4Cy"l NANCY KESSLER_ADAM Citizen
