As explained earlier, our department is totally involved in working with youth programs, particularly our Recreation Supervisors. Althouggh we have many volunteers to help our Recreation Supervisor's time is still taken up because of our part in the operation of these programs. It is the general consensus that we have a good set-up and a good community relationship. It is also felt that if we were ever to divorce ourselves from some of our contributions to the program, our supervisor's time would still be greatly needed to help coordinate activities, partieul&rly with groups who might splinter off from the B.O.B.S. - - groups with little or no experience. We can see many things happening that would create problems which the Department would eventually have to correct. There is also a need for the Department to progress, and with the present personnel set-up, it is very difficult. We are going to stagnate. Our services DI some areas of adult sports will also suffer. Getting a part-time employee to stay for any length of time is difficult; consequently, our continuity is constantly breai*ing down. I am therefore asking that you and the City Council give serious thought to adding another full-time supervisor to our staff, who would take care of adult sports and activities, such as: Sumer Softball Winter Softball Volleyball (men, women, co-ed) Summer Aquatics (including Summer Swim League and A.A.U. City Swim Club) Special clinics for players and officials Training programs Special events (tournaments, etc.) Ate# 841*4014Y . °mow+' t• Mr. Glaves -2- Budget needs for Recreation Supervisor Salary - lot step entry level Overhead Total Needs Present budget rovenue to be used towards proven Part-time Aide Salary Aquatic Supervisor's Salary Budget Revenue NET TOTAL NEEDS July 139 1981 $18,031.00 9,000.00 $27,031.00 $27,031.00 $ 8,065.00 4,500.00 $12,565.00 $12,565.00 Note: If a $20.00 assessment were added to adult sports activities named above, it is estimated that another $6,300 in revenue could be generated, thereby cutting the City's added contribution to $8,166.00 (Our fees would still be lower than most.) $14,466.00 I would sincerely appreciate the opportunity to bring this matter before the City Council. The softball people are particularly interested in talking to the Council on this matter. I don't like pressure groups, however, softball has been improved this year because of Steve Boomer who will leave July 21 to take a full-time position. They (softball interests) really feel we need someone to keep things together; I agree. We have not added anyone in 17 years. We have grown, we need the.help. I hope we can settle this in-house versus pressure being brought into the picture. 7 ' June 29, ).981 TO CITY COUNCIL: On behalf of the active softball community of Lodi we the SPORTS ADVISORY BOARD respectfully submit this letter of information and request. As duly elected officials representing 5,000 participating players and coaches, we carry a message of concern to our councilmen. For years our community's softball growth has been minimized due to the lack of playing facilities. We are keenly aware of the budget crisis created with the passage of Proposition 13 and -:he restrictions imposed on si pp*nndingHowever, a master plan for softball facilities n the immediate area could be implemented with construction of the capital port:ians done in yearly phases to ease the money burden. At present our Recreation Department has to turn away teams vieing for placement in the adult league, and those fortunate to get in are forced to play on an 8 1/2 day rotation schedule. Further, with the increasing popularity of softball the sheer size of the Lodi league, and the large economje impact on the community from softball, the time has come for permanent leadership in the form of a professional reereator to stabilize the program. Our program in the past has been run by part-time personnel without input to budgetary considerations and administered to by the Director of Parks and Recreation whose calendar is alretdy booked solid with summer commitments. Me, as a board, consider the most pressing of the issues to be the procurement of a Recreation Supervisor. Without continuity of leadership our board loses'its impact and our program will continue in limbo. TO CITY COUNCIL - continued Page 2 Please accept this letter in the light for which it is intended. We the SPORTS ADVISORY BOARD of 10 members do in fact speak for the majority of the 5,000 registered softball players in our community and were so elected to act as a liason between them and the agencies who govern us all. Thank you so much for your valuable time in this matter.
