BACKGROUND INFORMATION: In May of this year we discussed with the City Council the range of problems created by the existing Camphor trees on Church Street. We have again attached for Council information the memo dated May 8 from the Street Superintendent which categorizes the problems created by the Camphor trees on Church Street. It is the staff's recommendation that all trees in Categories 1, 2 and 3 be removed and replaced at this time. The replacement tree will be an Evergreen Pear (Pyrus Kawakami Standard). The approximate removal costs will be $10,000. It is recommended that the City purchase the replacement trees and plant them with City personnel. A tree and planting costs are estimated at $3,000. City Manager F 1 LE NO. .�►�X.c;�e;:.- MEMORANDUM, City of Lodi, Public Works Department TO: Public Works Director FROM: Street Superintendent DATE: May 8, 1984 SUBJECT: Camphor Trees - Church Street Per our discussion the Camphor trees on Church Street between lockeford Street and Lodi Avenue were inspected to determine the degree of damage they have caused to the sidewalk, curb and gutter. There are a total of 140 trees in sidewalk planters within the above mentioned area. The trees were placed into four categories with paint dots on the trunk of the tree facing the street approximately 1 foot above the sidewalk. 1. One yellow dot where tree has raised and cracked the sidewalk 1/2" or more; 2. Two yellow dots where trees have raised and cracked the sidewalk, curb and gutter 1/2" or more; 3. One white dot where tree has cracked the sidewalk, curb and gutter but does not constitute a hazard at this time; and 4. No markings where trees have not shown evidence of damage. Following is a breakdown of the above mentioned categories: Category 1 - 12 Category 2 - 29 Category 3 - 40 Category 4 - 59 Following is a breakdown of the categories per block within the area inspected: 200 Blk N.
