SUBJECT:
Froposed New Postal Facility - Downtown Location
DATE
lune 3, 1981
Council will recall that a letter dated December 15, 1977 was received
from Lee W. Stallard, District Manager, Sierra District, United States
Postal Service, advising that in their efforts to provide improved postal
service, the postal service is considering the construction of a new
post office in Lodi. The letter further stated that the postal service
would plan to build their new Main Office in the following general
preferred area defined as: bordered on the north by Lockeford Street,
on the east by Sacramento Street, on the south by Kettleman Lane, and
on the west by Ham Lane.
In April 1980, Walter F. Sanborn, Chairtman of the Central Lodi Improve-
ment Committee, appeared before Council asking for an expression of support
for the retention of all post office facilities in downtown Lodi. The
City Council unanimously voted to support that position and directed
the City Clerk to forward a letter confirming this action to Congressman
Shumwray, Senator Hayakawa and the proper postal officials.
Q
Because a year has passed since this indication of Council's support of
a downtown location was forwardeu to postal officials and to our legislators,
it .is recommended that Council, by resolution, reaffirm its position of
constructing this facility in the downtown area of Lodi. A proposed
resolution is attached for your consideration.
