The principles that the American Flag stands for were
created by the experiences of a great people, said Woodrow Wilson
many years ago.
The Flag has grown and changed with the Nation. Every-
thing that it represents is reflected in the lives of those
who carried it, stood by it, served under it, or protected
because of it.
The Flag, as we salute it today, is an emblem that evolved
through various stages, varied designs, and assorted appearances.
Again reflecting the growth and changes of the country, as well
as its people.
To commemorate the anniversary of its adoption on .Tune 14,
1777, Congress has set aside the 21 days from Flag Day through
Independence Day as a period to honor America.
By displaying: the national ,colors during :.this -21 day 1". 1 ;_ _
salute to America, we symbolize a -united democracy: through

this badge of -freedom and independence.

PROCLAMATION
The pcindpks that the Anwrican Flag stn-•tds for were created by the experiences of a mit people, said Woodrow
Wilson many years ago.
The Flag has grown and changed with the Nation. Everything that it represents is reflected in the liver of those who

Every community, group, and individual msy participate in this
nation-wide effort by helping the handicapped, by expressing
an appreciation for the aged, and by encouraging the young to
understand the opportunities, as well as the responsibilities, in-
herent in our constitutional system. Through such positive ac-
tion, at least during these 21 days, Americans may then
celebrate the Fourth of July with a feeling of accomplishment.

ing the American people regarding
the values of citizenship and their na-
tional heritage.

tion for our national history and tradi-
tion, pride in the accomplishments of
our constitutional form of government.

MEMBERS OF CONGRESS of the United States
join in declaring the 21 days as a period to honor
America so that freedom loving Americans might
demonstrate to the world that while we face
problems as individuals, and as a Nation, we are
proud of our country and the accomplishinents c
our :onstitutional government.
PROCLAMATIONS BY THE: GON E.RNORS of
the SO state, and other jurisdictions, on the
anniversary of independence make these 21 days a
meaningful time to honor America with
appropriate State House and statewide
celebrations.
MAYORS OF OUR NATION -S CITIES stimulate
the spirit of patriotism and respect for individual
libcrttcs by calling upon communitN and political
leaders to rrcogrnrc these day% with appropriate
obscrvanc^s. Many Nlasors initiate local prograrns
`sy issuing proclamations on Flag Da% and or the
Fourth of July, and surtultancous rel -_ase to the
media.
LABOR AND BUSINESS LEADERS participate
in this annual program. These representatives of
our freedom of enterprise society—the blue and
%shite collar workers --remind us of those Founders
who argued the structures of our constitutional
government into existence. The cooperative spirit
of business and labor is part of the success of the
system.
VFTFRANS, RELIGIOUS AND CIVIC
organizations having celebrations scheduled for
Flag Day and through the Fourth of July arc
encouraged to continue and to expand these
programs to promote .America and unity arnong all
Americans.
NEWSPAPERS. MAGAZINES. TELEVISION,
RADIO AND CABLE are primarily responsible for
what you see and hen:r about the programs to
HONOR AMERICA. The cooperation and support
of the media is vital to the success of this national
effort to point out the educational and historical
canoe of Amcrica'-x independence and
c ita'onal government, Read the editorials as
well as the news columns for ideas and plans; listen

YOU ARE INVITED to join in this non-partisan pro-
gram of the American I iistoric and Cultural Society to
HONOR AMERICA. You can assist by taking an ac-
tive role in mating your community's problems, bear-
ing r. mind the common good of the greatest number.
Put into: practice some of those innovative ideas
you've been dreaming up to make life a little more
rewarding in your area. Help knit the ties of respon-
sibility and fellowship that strengthen the foundations
of America, especially during the 21 days—FLAG
DAY through INDEPENDENCE DAY.

* Adopt an HONOR AMERICA program in
your community
* Encourage the display of the American Flag
every day starting on lune 14 and cont►r
through July 4
* Invite retail merchants to include in
their advertising an encouragement to their
customers to join in local program activities
* Suggett that shopping centers have special
display. of historic events and appropriate
ceremonial program involving schools, ser-
vice clubs, patriotic organizations
* Sponsor arts and crafts %%orkshops, study
forgotten skills, involve senior citizen,
grandchildren learning from grandparent,,
* Organize folk festivals with traditional food,
dance, comurnes and music
* Invite professional assistance from

of the world as a symbol of power, courage and

against a bell-shaped blue background dotted with
13 white stats representing the original American
colonies, and all encircled in a ring of 50 gold stars.
The American Historic and Cuaural Society, Inc.,
was established in June 1970 under the laws of the
District of Columbia, and its program to increa-.e the
knowledge of the American public about its cultural
heritage. constitutional government, and history,
and to commemorate the anniversary of 0c indepen-
dence of the United States of America. It is nort-
political and non-profit.
