O.C. 20910 April 13, 1981 Ms. Alice Reimsche City Clerk 221 west Pine Street Lodi, California 95240 Dear -rri-ends: Thank you for expressing opinions about the Presidentts Program for Economic Recovery. I believe our nation is at a crossroads. We can continue to foster -big government and use our tax dollars to support an eves growing list of special interests. or we can return to policies of rewarding the hard- work and investment which made this country great. I have favored the ,latter approach throughout my career in the Senate. bast Congress I cosponsored the Roth -Kemp II legislation- which would !save cut personal income taxes by ten_ percent a year for three years. Currently 2 an working to ensure passage of President Reagan*s Program for Economic Recovery. This four-part program combines budget budget and tax cuts, rollbacks of regullations# and consistently limited monetary growth. The proposed budget cuts will be severe but they have been carefully designed to limit the growth of government while pro- tecting our neediest citizens. Reduced taxes and regulations will encourage much-needed increases in national productivity. However, my support of tax cuts does not conflict with my firm commitment to a balanced budget. New data suggests that the additional economic activity generated by such cuts will actually increase the flow of revenue into the Treasury. In an atmosphere of stable monetary growth, I am convinced these measures will reduce inflation and revitalize the American economy. I believe that a sacrifice now will enable all Americans to lead better lives in the future and I am committed to passing the President's program in the form it was submitted to Congress. It was good to hear from you. sincerely, Fmt A, 44 - dw-Wramm S. I. Hayakawa SIH: bkb MAY - 8 MI
