Mr. Rick Dentino, Chair
Lodi Arts Commission
900 S. Central Avenue
Lodi, CA 95240
Dear Mr. Dentino:
At its regular meeting of May 6, 1987, the City Council expressed its
concern regarding the declining number of members of the Arts Commission.
It is our understanding that there are now six vacancies on the commission.
The City Council has directed the City Clerk to nct advertise and post for
the filling of the latest vacancy until the Council ha- had opportunity to
review the status of this commission.
The Council would very much appreciate the input of commission members as
part of its consideration. of this matter. Specifically, the Council
requests the commission's comments and recommendations on the size, status
and future of the commission. Over the years the Arts Commission has played
a significant role in developing broad-based support and appreciation of the
arts in out City. We are hopeful that this good work will go on and that
I' the
Commission
will continue toplay a strong rale in community affairs.
Mayor Evelyn Olson would appreciate receiving the Commission's written
comments for transmittal to her fellow City Councilmembers. We look forward
to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
4.

Dear Mayor Olson,
The City Council's concern Re: The Arts's Commission's
high turnover rate has come to my attention_ I feel this note
is imperative to alay the council's collective mind of any fears
or misgivings.
While six replacements (almost half the commission's force)
at one time seems on the su face to be exorbitant, this should
not be misconstrued as "rats deserting a sinking ship." Four
of the commissioners are leaving simply because their terms have
expired; (they may not be reappointed until another year has
elapsed.) two others due to changes in employm nt requirements.
All six were fine, productive commissioners, and are leaving with
regrets.
In addition the six candidates we have recruited for re-
placement are potentially even better as they bring a fresh
approach and new enthusiasm to Lodi.'s Art Scene. They will rep-
resent a valid cross-section of that arena, and I whole-heartedly
recommend the council approval of all six as soon as possible.
Mayor, it is my fervent wish to continue to promote the arts
locally in the manner I feel befits the community and is in keep-
ing with the council's standards. I am dedicated to these ends;
please rely on me.
The city council, in their foresightedness, originally es-
tablished us as a 15 person commission. Cutting people -power
at this time would be ill advised. The proposed 1987-88 Lodi
Arts Commission consists of vital people who feel as do 1, that
Post Office Box 871 0 Lodi, California 95241
our impendino move to Hutchins Street Square (new hub of the
Arts in Lodi) will be the catalvst for promotionability, dir-
ection and execution of our best Arts programs ever.
We're all in this together, Mrs. Mayor. Let your new
`87-88 Arts Commission show you what we can (and will) Jo.
Attached is a list of project proposals for the comina
year. Other spontanious events will be added as the need appears.
We will require a full compliment of Commissioners to accomplish
these goals.
If there are additional points you wculd.like me to cover,
please feel free to contact me through the commission office.
