CITY OF LODI
P.O. Box 320

Dear Jerry:
/280
I have received details and pricing from Lori Johnson concerning the
acquisition of a Call Detail Recorder and Analyzer for the City of
Lodi. We have done some negotiating on the price, and I think they
have now extended a reasonable discount.
The unit we decided on is a ComDev Recorder Model TP 8100, and the
price she quoted is $12,122.37, including hardware, installation,
accessories, and training. This unit is somewhat higher priced than
the guess I gave you earlier; that lower priced unit was for a
Summa 4, a smaller system of lesser capacity.
The model that I am recommending to you has hard disk storage (much
better long-term reliability than floppy disk) and has a capacity for
storing 50,000 call records and 400 telephone extensions. This ought
to be more than ample to handle your needs for the foreseeable
future.
The ComDev unit is capable of producing an amazing number of detailed
reports concerning telephone activities. I have asked Lori to send
you a copy of the operator's manual for it which gives you an idea of
the operation,, the command structure, and the report format. it
gives a very good analysis of usage, activities and patterns, and
details, and also gives a number of technicalanalyses on trunk usage
and the like that would be valuable to me.
The question of where to locate the CDR equipment was discussed. The
telephone room where the SLI switch is located is now pretty well
filled up. Lori suggested locating the unit at Data Processing which
I think is quite appropriate. In order to do that, .since DP is some
distance from the switch, and direct cabling is not permissible at.
that distance, a couple of short -haul modems should be obtained to
use existing city wiring for the connection. The modems are included
in the quoted price.
The question of an additional port was raised. This would be needed
if an additional terminal was to be connected to the device, say,
located in your office. I told Lori that I didn't think this would
be necessary, that all of the operations could be done in Data
Processing. The only other possibility might be to locate a terminal
at the switchboard someday to give access to the built-in telephone
directory. However, I don't think that the Lodi city telephone
directory is complex enough at this time to warrant on-line
computerized information.
I think this should be all of the information that you need. I have
asked Lori to supply you with the instruction manual to show you what
the unit will do.
I will plan on being in Lodi again in a couple of weeks, probably the
14th or 15th of March. If you have any questions, please do not
hesitate to call.
Best personal regards,
, PE
