AGENDA TITLE: Presentation to Participants in the Smart Valley Places Community Leadership
Institute

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Mayor Nakanishi to present certificates of recognition to members of
the community that took part in the Smart Valley Places Community
Leadership Institute.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Lodi is one of the 14 cities within the 8 counties of San Joaquin
Valley participating in the Smart Valley Places partnership, which
promotes sustainable growth and aims to create safer, healthier and
more economically viable communities.
The Community Leadership Institute was a free six -session series that was offered within each participating
city in an attempt to increase civic engagement and technical understanding of Livability Principles and
implementation capacity among local leaders, government staff, and stakeholders, particularly in low-income
and minority communities. These series of half-day training sessions were also designed to foster an
effective working relationship between community residents, city planners, and decision makers. The six
sessions that the institute provided included: Local Government and Sustainable Communities, Land Use and
Sustainable Communities, Sustainable Housing and Community Development, Local and Regional
Transportation, Water/Wastewater Management, and Environmental Equity.
A total of 10 community members from Lodi attended the Leadership Institute sessions that were held at the
Community Partnership for Families' Lodi Center. Mayor Nakanishi will present Certificates of Recognition to
the following participants in Lodi's Community Leadership Institute:
