Mayor Hinchman, honorable council members, City Manager Petersen --
My name is Arthur Raab. I have lived in Lodi for 29 years and now reside
at 1800 West Walnut Street. I thank you for providing the opportunity for citizens
to voice their concerns to you.
I have a dreaa; tonight that I want to share with you. In the words of one
of the finest citizens of America and of the World, "it is a dream deeply rooted
in the American dream", and evolves out of the challenging words of the Declaration
of Independence and the Bill or Righi:s. It centers on our creed that 'All persons
are created equal'.
I have a dream tonight.
I have a dream that the Civic leaders of Lodi will proclaim to all of us the
request of our Congress and of our Pi,sident that the 3rd Monday in January will
be set aside as a day to. lift up_the struggles_ and meaning of the life of Martin
Lute King, Jr.
have a dream tonight.
I have a dream that, should they remain open to the public on that 3rd Monday,
the City Hall and the City Library will be appropriately decorated so that all
who enter therein will know that this City reverences the goals for which Martin
Luther King, Jr. give his life.
I have a dream tonight.
I have a dream that the Civic and the Spiritual leaders of my city will, by
proclamation, word, and example, lead all of us in a challenge to live up to the
best of our Christian heritage; for in so doing, we will be helping to reach the
ultimate goal of Martin Luther King, Jr. that not only little black boys and black
girls will be able to join hands with litLle white boys and white girls and walk
together as sisters and brothers -- but that American boys and American girls
can join hands and walk together with Russian boys and Russian girls and lead
all of us older citizens of the nations of the world in a beautiful symphony of
brotherhood and sisterhood that will, from the scourge of war, make us free at last!
Thank you again for allowing me this opportunity to express my concern about
this matter; and if I may, Mr. Mayor, may I ask if any of you share this concern;
and, if so, will this council consider taking action upon this matter?
