McCarty Mayor of the City of Lodi 221 West Pine Street Lodi, CA 95240 Dear Mayor McCarty: You may soon be hearing from one of a group of mayors in Southern California who are concerned that the lack of school housing is a negative factor in the life of their communities. It is ny understanding that they will be solicit- ing support for approaching the governor relative to his recent freeze on school construction funds and to his minimal recommendation to the Leroy F. Greene building program in next year's budget. Lodi Unified School District has a housing problem of considerable magnitude, which we have discussed on several occasions. That this housing shortage and its attendant short term solutions (overcrowding, busing, double sessions) negatively impact the quality of life in Lodi is obvious to all. The state building program (in which this district has several projects pending) has the capability not only of improving the quality of life, but also of the pro- vision of $35 - $40 million dollars worth of construction contracts to this area. (Recent national statistics have highlighted valley towns as being among the nation's areas of highest unemployment.) Thus Lodi has two reasons to be intensely interested in the governor's and legislature's actions rela- tive to the Greene program. Please call if I can be of Cordially.
