SHERIFFS AND CLERKS; OFFICES IN CITIES OF NOT LESS THAN 35,000 POPULATION DAVID R. A/aOtRSON At"evANT COUNT .YYMNTYTON As we approach the budgeting process for FY 81-82, we are investigating means of reducing the demand on County funds. One of our areas of interest is in the elimination of State Mandates, which are not funded by the State, and which do not constitute a justifiable priority rating for continuation. One of the Mandates which we would hope to have repealed by legislation this year concerns Section 24251 of the Govern- ment Code (see attached). We discussed the requirements of this Section with both the Sher'Ff and the County Clerk and found concurrence in the fact t, -at the benefits would not justify the expenditure to create offices for these two departments in the one qualifying city of our County, which is Lodi. In fact, with our limited resources, it would result in reducing those personnel in both the Sheriff's and the County Clerk's Offices who Ore presently required to perform County -wide duties. . Therefore, we Mould appreciate the support of the Lodi City Council in the elimination of this State Mandate. Thank you for your consi.deratjon in this matter, and please call on us if you have any questions. Sincerely, 611 e C. E.
