Dear Alice,
The enclosed letter has been mailed to
Mr. Barber. I could not send it to him, however, without
sending one to you and the Lodi City Council. Without
the recommendation of the Council, I would not have been
selected to represent Lodi and the Northern San Joaquin
County District 4.
I
This has been very.rewarding for me. I hope
tat tha work of the San Joaquin County Arts Council has
met with the approval of the Lodi City Council and that l
it will continue to spredd awareness and.the importance
of the Arts throue-hout the County.
Should you have .a recommendation for a
replacement, -T ease contact Ruth Surdez, sculptor and
representative of District 4 from Woodbridge, who is the
chairmr.r. of me bership `or the Arts Council.
Thanks again for your opening up this new
experience for me. Should I be able to receive the
Lodi New -.sentinel, I will watch the work of the City
Council with interest from `iicronesia. This promises
to be exciting and rewarding work ,.nd I'll let you know
what I'm doing,when possible.
fest regards,
Naomi McCallum Carey

Dear Mr. Barbers
Your recommendation that I become one of the first
Councilmembers of the San Joaquin County Arts Council was
one of the finest things that have been done for me.
Through this organization's meetings, I have been
able to meet representatives of the arts throughout the
county. The work of this group has been very rewarding for
all of us. We know that increased awareness of the Council
and the Supervisors' aims for the Council will make its
work much more effective.
This letter is for the purpose of tendering my
resignation. There is no other reason that could possibly
have caused this to happen, except this one: I shall be
entering the Peace Corps on March 24, 1984. On January 13,
we leave Lon Angeles for training in Ponape and Truk or
Palau. at the end of this training, my two-year service
with the Corps will begin. This new adventure in Micronesia
is very exciting to Me and, I hope, very rewarding to the
residents of the islands and myself. I shall be aiding in
the setting up of oo-operatives in Truk or Palau and
helping in furthering the self-sufficient goal of the people.
This resignation will be effective upon your
receiving this letter. Members of the Council have begun
to look for a replan ement for this seat, and I know that
there are many qualified persons in District 4 who can
do this.work.
Thank y ca , again, for your nomination and for my
being able to associate with such vital, stimulating and
forward-looking individuals.
Sincerely,
Naomi McCallum Carey
